Not angiosarcoma

Hi Everyone,

I posted on here at the beginning of 2023.  I'd had lumpectomy left breat August 2010 followed by 8 chemo and 15 radium.

2020 lumpectomy on right breast, no chemo but 15 radium.

On 16th December 2022 I noticed the underside of my left breast had gone a funny, brownish/red colour.

Long story short, saw consultant who thought it was a bruise but did scan.  Discharged with 'keep an eye on it'.

The discolouration spread so I went back.  Still same diagnosis but different consultant.

It went worse so back again to my 2020 consultant who did 3 biopsies all negative.  Couple more appointments and she said she was sure it wasnt angiosarcoma but consultant radiologist would know more.  I'd never heard that word before.  Also told me radium treatment could cause skin issues.  After 13 years I was a bit surprised but maybe I'm a late developer.  I never saw consultant radiologist.

Couple of days later I thought I'd see what I didnt have and was shocked that the online photos could have been me.

Anyway, consultant insisted it wasn't AS but my research said the only way to tell was to biopsy the purple spots.  This wasnt done but I figured if I had it I was a goner.  If I didn't I'd be ok. At my age I've lived longer than any member of my family anyway.

TBH they made me feel like a hypochondriac nuisance so I left it.

On 5th August I went for annual mammogram.   I was recalled for further scan and 3d mammogram on 22nd August.   All fine they said.

5 days ago I noticed that the same discolouration had spread to my right breast.

I rang my Macmillan nurse, who'd been on this journey with me since December,  and she suggested it was an insect bite.  Keep an eye on it.

To say i feel stupid is an understatement.

I've decided, based on my 'goner/ok' self diagnosis that I will not, ever ring them again.  Let it run its course.

My left breast is slightly paler than in December but its 8 months - some .longterm bruise.

I am keeping my eyes on both now but feel so terrified and weepy all the time.

My husband is recovering from surgery but is getting stronger.

I'm 73 next month.  He's 78.

Stay safe everyone and good luck xx

  • Hi

When people are first referred on suspicion of cancer they are often obviously very worried. When we are told not cancer sometimes we miss the fast track process that is around cancer and of course are left with the question of what actually is it then.

Looking at this page on cancer research uk I see it does talk about some side effects that might occur weeks or months after treatment - don't know if that is helpful to you.

  • Thanks Steve.  Yes they told me about Talygen-somethingorother and it could be that but 13 years later?

    Stay safe. X

  • Hi,

I am waiting for an appointment with consultant because I have stange bruising that came from nowhere, spready rapidly over whole breast that had radiotherapy for breast cancer over 4 years ago.

Like you the photos I see online make me think the worst. I went to emergency GP who ruled out cellulitis.

I don't want an angiosarcoma diagnosis.....but I don't want a misdiagnosis even more because it is so rare and hard to diagnose.

Did you ever get a diagnosis?

  • Hi Leonie,  my oncologist was certain it wasn't angiosarcoma but no further tests were done.

It has faded now so only apparent to me but from 16th December 2022 to August 2023 was a long time to have it on my mind.

Like you I queried how conversant they were with their diagnosis considering how rare it is.  My only comfort was that I felt so well.

Almost a year later and I still feel great.  I hope you have a good outcome too.

    Stay well xxx

  • Thank you so much for replying.

I got to see the consultant yesterday even though I had no appointment and they did 3 punch biopsies of the bruised area.

They said they didn't know what it was but angiosarcoma obviously a possibility. Two week wait for results.

So your discoloration lasted from Dec to Aug?

I too feel fine, no pain in the area, nothing.

I am praying for good results

  • Are you based in Uk?

  • Yes Merseyside.   I really believe we have world class oncologists in our region so must listen to them.

  • Hi Leonie, did you ever get your diagnosis? I am in a similar position and just hoped you were ok and it wasn’t angiosarcoma? Best wishes.

  • Hope your diagnosis is clear.  AS is extremely rare I was told. It's now 1 year and 3 days since I first saw the discolouration.  Hope we get good news from Leonie68 too.

  • Thanks Anne, I had breast cancer in 2016 and had mastectomy and radiotherapy and just had a lesion removed from my back, looked like a blood blister. GP was convinced it was a benign angioma but theCryample has come back as cancerous and I have been referred to the sarcoma unit to rule out angiosarcoma, which I know is incredibly rare. I’m just in bits waiting really Cry I hope you are ok? Xx
