Just been diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma this morning.

I had surgery 8 weeks ago to remove a large lump from my scalp.  It has been completely removed with an identified 6.8 mm margin, with a skin graft replacing the area removed.  It has been identified as a soft tissue sarcoma.  I am being referred to a specialist sarcoma team.  No idea what to expect and really scared.  Advice on what is likely to happen next would be appreciated.

  • Hi

My wife has Leiomyosarcoma so rather different to your experience except in the detail of being sarcoma and therefore in one of the "rare" cancer categories.

As this is the case there are a number of centres of excellence where the NHS concentrates sarcoma care to try and increase the skills, the list can be seen here.

The pages on the main site for sarcoma here identify treatment options - surgery often being first choice, but you have already had that and fingers crossed you will now go to the path "after treatment".

In my wife's case she went on to the chemotherapy route - it was not a simple option but in her case it managed to put her cancer to sleep, it has remained unchanged now for over 8 years so we are living with cancer - and making the most of every day.

Waiting is one of the most difficult parts of everybody's cancer journey and it is really scary, I hope sharing a little of my wife's journey helps to reassure you that whatever happens next there is a future ahead. I did a living with less stress course to help me deal with this.

    <<hugs>>

  • I was diagnosed on 3/7 with soft tissue physically I’m fine it’s just the mental side I’m struggling with due to see consultant and have a op prob October time - best advice is to keep in contact with your clinical nurse once you are given one they are there to answer any questions and are really helpful hope you get on ok x
