my husband had his prostate removed 10 years ago, followed by 35 sessions of RT .he had a AUS fitted 9 years ago.

for 5  years PSA was 0 , it is now 2.

He has been healthy and well , last week he passed blood and blood clots, he was prescribed antibiotics in case it was a UTI .

he only passed blood for one day, now a week later he has again passed blood.

he spoke to a urologist who said bleeding was a common side effect of RT even 10 years after treatment.

Is this a common occurrence?

  • Hi Swindon and welcome

I see that u haven't had a reply yet which may mean that it is not a common occurrence after 10 years.

I had RT over 3 years ago and have not heard of this problem although I know that u can get side effects from RT many years later.

    Not sure what AUS is.

What has the specialist said about the bleeding and does he have any ideas about what to do?

    Best wishes

    Steve

    Hi Steve

    thanks for replying

the doctor just said it could Be RT related even after all this time.and if it keeps happening they may put a camera up to look at the bladder, obviously this has the possibility of causing infections.

the AUS  is an artificial sphincter , the urethra has a cuff to prevent leakage, and he releases the cuff when he needs to pee.

Having the AUS makes him reluctant to have the camera inserted incase it damages anything.

  • Ok, I hope that they can sort it out for him, I presume that he has finished the antibiotics which would obviously rule out infection.

Perhaps someone may still reply with experience of this issue

  • I still have occasional bleeding - I also had it before prostate cancer diagnosed 4 years ago and after 9 months of HT and a month of RT my PSA is still undetectable. I had had had prostatitis etc before and it had always been a problem from about age 45 - so working up to casncer at 73!  Same for my younger brother to at almost the same age.  Always worth checking out if necessary especially this length of time afterwards.  I had this done about 10 months after my RT once the bleeding came back and everything including the bladder clear.  It may be worth checking if there is a chance of a scan in the first instance to see if there is a problem or to see where the problem is located rather than go straight in with the camera - this may not be a viable choice as quite often things cannot be seen well enough on scans and much better to go with the camera.  Got to say the camera was no problem to me at all - though I don't have an AUS but so long as the team are aware of the AUS then there should be no problem.  If he does have to have the camera then remind him to tell everyone that he has it - even on the day as team members may be changed at short notice and may not be up to speed - especially at this time when the NHS is even more overworked than normal.

Hope all goes well and they can sort this out.

i had radiotherapy on my prostate 5 years ago.last session on my 75 th. birthday! Afterwards i got frequency of urinationand discomfort, so had a cystoscopy inflicted on me!

gross pain and ten days of bleeding passing rusty razorblades and up and down days and nights to toilet. Never again! much worse even than a colonoscopy

final results of these two exquisite tortures.

"nothing abnormal seen, except inflammation probably due to R T"

Ah well " mustn't complain"...wouldnt do any good to. God bless the nhs...YES!!!

As i understand it symptoms often occurr or recurr years after, causing chronic pain. i have to learn to live positively with it!!

May all go well with you, comrade in arms

    Thank you

I agree about telling everyone he had the AUS he was in hospital a while ago with a gall stone issue, I made sure it was written in bold on his notes, told everyone about it.

it is  amazing procedure but not that well known.

I think we will ask for a scan in the first instance, then the camera if needs be.

The bleeding has stopped again, we think it’s linked to straining when passing a stool.

  • Ouch.  I have had one like that but the last one about 9 months after my RT went fine, I would go as far as to say the best experience I have had of one and I have probably had nearly a dozen over the years.  I think it depends on the person doing it myself.  My urologist then was probably the best I have had.  Unfortunately he has now retired.  Just remembered that if you are on blood thinners or anticoagulants for heart problems this can cause bleeding so that could be a reason if you are on this type of medication.  Though it should still be checked out.

    Take care

  • It can be linked to straining for bowel movement.  Maybe try some stool softeners like movicol or fybogel, use a glycerine suppository - all can be bought over the counter or ask your GP.  Incidentally shoudl have asked if your hubby is on any type of anticoagulant for heart problems as these can cause bleeding.

    All the best.
