Hi all

Dad had his first dose of chemo today and a bit concerned about effects as the symptoms of his COPD are the same as chemo - coughing, breathlessness etc.  Can I ask of those that had a reaction how long after receiving chemo did symptoms start?

Thanks

  • Hi

In my case it was two days after, the side effects can vary, I had the breathlessness it’s not pleasant, especially when your trying to sleep, the other is fatigue, that’s common to everyone, the first dose is always the worst, it’s just getting used to it, but if your worried at all phone his specialist nurse and let them know.

    take care

Mine also started after 2 days and lasted about a week - I got the tiredness and aches and pains but didn't get breathless - I also got the weird taste in my mouth which wasn't very pleasant, but it didn't stop me eating - I like my food lol..

I found the first 3 cycles to be not too bad but they gradually got worse and I found the last one (6th cycle) to be really bad - I was very tired and achy and it took a good two weeks to start to shake it off.

I think everyone is different in how it effects them... I tried not to give into it and did as many of my normal things as possible including walking the dog each day..

I found it was easier to do anything vaguely energetic as early in the day as possible as I found the tiredness gets worse as the day goes on.

    Hope it all goes well.

    Thanks Joe

With these symptoms did you need hospital treatment?

Nurse said symptoms would be over weekend into Monday.  It's just cos dad suffers with the breathlessness on occasions it's hard to know.  I suppose if his inhaler doesn't sort it then it's time for action :-(! Fingers crossed he'll be ok!

    Thanks again

    Thanks Kevin

I'll be a wreck at the end of all thus :-(!

Yes I've said to dad mornings tend be better.  Dad won't be allowed to move if mum has anything to do with it - which really isn't healthy!!

Someone recommended pineapple for the bad taste and the antihistamine loritadine for the aches and pains!! I asked nurse today and she said yes try it - it works for some but not others!  We'll give it a go.

    Onwards and upwards for everyone

    Thanks again

  • Jackie. Please be aware that pineapple juice is a laxative and can lead to loose bowel motions. I take a glass every day to avoid constipation, but never more than one!

Hi Seamus47, I should heartedly agree with you, I suffered with the same thing, I found just eating 1 slice of fresh pineapple every 3rd day helped me.
