Waiting for TURP

So LH had his telephone appointment with his urology consultant last week. Apparently the urodynamics showed a severe blockage and significant urine retention (220cc). Therefore the consultant considered a TURP was necessary and he is now on the waiting list. He said he would mark it as urgent as it is holding up his cancer treatment. When I pushed him on a time scale he said 'not within 2 weeks but maybe about 6' .

The result of all this is that his RT will be delayed which we are disappointed about. Does anyone e know if the 6 weeks is likely? When I have looked it up it is usually more like 18 weeks! Apart from the health side of things our son is getting married in the summer and I had really hoped that his RT would be done by then and he would have had some time to recover from it by then.

I think what annoys me is that he has had the same symptoms from when he first went to the GP and everyone along the way has been told. He even had an ultrasound scan right at the beginning that showed urine retention. But it was only when the GP contacted the oncologist to say he had a urine infection that this was all started to be taken seriously. And he could have been on a waiting list much earlier if this had happened earlier Worried

Sorry for the rant !

  • Hello

Your rant is accepted. I would be ranting too in those circumstances!!

If you look at my journey I was placed on the TURP waiting list on 14/01/2022 at my MDT meeting and the operation was on 04/11/2022. Mine wan't urgent and delayed my radiotherapy by about 6-8 months.

When I got fed up with waiting I rang my CNS and said to her "When's this TURP then" her reply was "the list is 15 months here Brian, but you know in the NHS he who shouts gets". Well I shouted "I need this xxxxxxx TURP so I can have my radiotherapy" - She laughed, and booking and scheduling ran me, half an hour later with a date the week after next.

All I can say is contact the Consultant or your CNS - tell them he's got anxiety now it's been missed and see if you can get them to give you a date.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Rant away.

Get it said, and get it out.

Maybe copy it to your MP and to PALS.

    Changed, but not diminished.
  • Thanks Brian . A rant does help! Once it gets to the 6 weeks he mentioned we will start making some noise!
