Afternoon all

so today was the day for my radical prostatectomy. Arrived at Castle Hill Hospital at 6:50am and got taken through to the surgical lounge. Following seeing nurses & doctors regarding the op I was taken down in theatre just after 9.00am and was on the ward for 1:30pm, a little late but this was due to having to be given painkillers for the sensation of needing to urgently empty my bladder even though I have a catheter fitted, apparently this sensation will pass by tomorrow.

i was very sleepy from then until now (4:30pm) and still am so I’m going to sign off now before I drop my phone. The main thing from this is I’m still here and will still be here for years to come, after the surgeon popped his head in and told me that he got it all as planned with no complications.

Next job for me is to become a first time grandad at the end of this month so this cancer was no way going to beat me.

Best regards to you all, I’m going back to sleep

John

  • Hi  - this is great news and I was so pleased to see your Day 80 update (not so much Day 79 Stuck out tongue winking eye).  Any figure less than 0.1 after prostatectomy is excellent and when a surgeon gives you that summary about “fully contained and in the pathology tray” , well, what a cause for celebration.
Having read your story and seen how you approach your treatment pathway I’m really impressed.  My opinion is that you’ve no need to reset your “14 day to no pad” clock after your blip on Day 79 : just treat it as a learning experience and avoid such moves in future.     AW

  • Brilliant news - concentrate on the result and forget the rubbish tip incident’! Onwards and upwards !

  • Operation day + 145

Hi guys, just adding to my ongoing experience thread “post surgery” today. I’m doing well, I’m still dry and getting on with life.

I’ve reached the final stage of the recovery process in as much as I took delivery of a penis pump to try to eventually bring back some semblance of sexual normality.

As a reminder of what was removed during my operation, was of course the prostate and the right hand nerve bundle which controlled the blood flow into the right side of my penis.

For the time being I’m taking 5mg of Cialis which apparently keeps the blood vessels open around the genitalia and now I use the pump for ten minutes per day simply to encourage blood back into my penis’ blood vessels and to minimise any loss of length and I must do this daily for 30 days without any sexual contact in that time.

I’m told that I may be able to resume sexual relations after this period by using the pump in conjunction with the plethora of penis rings that come with the pump and this will likely be my sex life for a while to come, possibly 1 to 2 years, but if I don’t do this, then it’ll never happen.

I have an appointment to go back to the ED clinic in March next year where, depending how things are progressing with my ED, I’ll find out if I can move beyond this to using full strength viagra because some natural function has been restored or whether to carry on with the pump & rings as I am now, at this next appointment its also when I get my first 6 month gap PSA test post op.

So for this next month there’s no sexual activity and for at least the following 4 months it’s all going to be a bit mechanical, as I can tell you from my own experience, there is nothing sexy about this particular stage, but again it’s just that, it’s a stage to move through to get to the one beyond it, if alls fair in love & war.

Good luck & best wishes to those of you who are just finding themselves at the beginning of this journey and to those who have also been there and done this too.

I shall next report back, after my appointment & PSA results in March next year.

Keep moving forward, look forward to tomorrow and plan for things to look forward to doing.

    John

  • Hi Johnyboy,

I'm in a pretty similar place to where you are at the moment. In addition I have been lucky enough to have been prescribed Viradal Caverjet a solution which you inject into the side of the penis approx 20-30 minutes before intercourse. This all sounds all a bit mechanical but definitely is working for me and takes away the anxiety of will it or won't it work.  That way me and my lovely lady can make a fun romantic night of it. Worth discussing if you are not squeamish about needles.

    All the best BM

  • I'm squeamish.

My behind clenched just reading that.

    Astonished

I will second that. I am needle phobic so it's not for me!! Disappointed!

    Best wishes - Brian.
