Afternoon all

so today was the day for my radical prostatectomy. Arrived at Castle Hill Hospital at 6:50am and got taken through to the surgical lounge. Following seeing nurses & doctors regarding the op I was taken down in theatre just after 9.00am and was on the ward for 1:30pm, a little late but this was due to having to be given painkillers for the sensation of needing to urgently empty my bladder even though I have a catheter fitted, apparently this sensation will pass by tomorrow.

i was very sleepy from then until now (4:30pm) and still am so I’m going to sign off now before I drop my phone. The main thing from this is I’m still here and will still be here for years to come, after the surgeon popped his head in and told me that he got it all as planned with no complications.

Next job for me is to become a first time grandad at the end of this month so this cancer was no way going to beat me.

Best regards to you all, I’m going back to sleep

John

  • Thanks Barnman

tried that and can only find pro mode which is a max of 10

now concerned that I have not been doing enough and time to op is now short

    cheers

  • Well said AW and in full agreement. I'm on the first few days of using a Soma pump for what is called penile rehabilitation. This is basically a suction pump to get good blood flow which produces an erection under vacuum pressure. The instructions are to do this daily for a few weeks prior to introducing it into full intercourse with the aid of constriction rings so we will see how that goes. All the best

  • Hi John

did you get the paid for version of Squeeze time ?

  • Hi Magpie29. Looking at when your op is, I’m sure you are doing enough pelvic floor exercises pre op so don’t worry about that. I found the squeezy (NHS) app quite useful as a reminder to do the exercises. As suggested, I did these 3 times a day and each time only takes about 15 minutes. The exercise is just doing an internal squeeze as if you want to stop mid pee. This can be done watching TV, driving your car i.e anytime. My op was in March and I think I regained full control and ditched all pads after about 6 weeks. You shouldn’t do the exercise with catheter fitted. I got a bit over confident and stopped doing them but slight leakage reminded me that I do need to keep doing them and now just do about 10 minutes a day to exercise the muscle. You will soon be on the road to recovery.

  • Thanks Amnesiac

thats really helpful and also very reassuring

    cheers

  • Glad all went well. I hope you have a speedy recovery so you can really enjoy playing the grandad role to the full! Lots of joy for you to come:)

  • Hi all - It’s been a little while but here’s some good news (Op Day +80)

    Op Day +79

Having only very occasional small leaks, usually when stretching / reaching for something, today at the public tip I dropped something into a container that needed taking out again so reaching over, most of my weight was bent over the barrier on my lower stomach, and I proper wet myself for the first time.
Ahh well, I won’t do that again at least, I’ll get the guy to fish it out himself if he wants it out of the container that bad.

    Op Day +80

    Today is a good day

My first post op PSA test result came back as less than 0.05 = undetectable

My consultant also confirmed that he got 100% of my prostate out and that the cancer was 100% contained within the prostate.

So I am personally more than pleased to announce that I am cancer free YESSSS!!

Thanks to all of you who have taken time out to read my posts / this thread and helped me by providing support & ideas, it’s meant a lot and I’m grateful to you all

Good luck, and best wishes on your own journeys wherever it takes you.

    John
