Hi, I was hoping someone could give some advice and support.  My brother has been having chemo following surgery to remove a tumour from his pancreas.  He has just had cycle 6 of chemo and is much more poorly after this cycle.  He has been suffering from loose bowel movements for two days and refuses to eat, although drinking well.  He just cant seem to get out of bed and its very upsetting to see him.  Is this normal? Thank you

    Hi kip23

sorry to hear about your brothers problems with chemotherapy, I have had 4 chemotherapy’s so far, I am awaiting a scan to see if they can put me forward for the operation,

I too have had problems with chemotherapy especially in the beginning, severe vomiting, then severe bowel issues to the point both times I was admitted to hospital, I too understand the total tiredness, exhaustion, and the sadness for you seeing him so poorly.

mostly important is to drink ! So important to help keep at bay urine infections and dehydration,

may I suggest that you contact his specialist, or you should have a helpline to call for advice, they will do whatever they can to help I found their advice invaluable, his specialist needs to know exactly what is happening and when so that they can advice, make adjustments where necessary,

when I was so I’ll my specialist adjusted my chemo, I still get the symptoms after chemo ,, nausea,, bowel issues ( these can be painful) general discomfort in tummy area, total wipe out and exhaustion, and emotions, but thanks to talking to my specialist/ nursing team, I know can managed these issues, and see them as part of the chemo treatment, it’s still tough, chemotherapy makes you ill in a way that cannot explain, and it is very draining, but , the better days are out there when things are not soo bad, look forward to them . Please contact your team / specialist there will be things they can do .

Thank you so much for kindly replying.  We have been in touch with the cancer team and their advice has helped us to understand.  They have explained the chemo has these symptoms at times and how to deal with it. Thnakfully he has improved slightly today.  I hope you have some positive news and i wish you all the best.  I really cannot express my admiration for those dealing with chemo, you are all so incredible x
