Genetic Counselling for pancreatic cancer inheritance risk

Hi All,

Last week I lost my mother to pancreatic cancer after her year-long battle.  Quite a tough time obviously, but now that she's gone my thoughts turn to the risk posed to me of possibly inheriting the disease.  Her oncologist told me to go get genetic counselling but my insurance told me it isn't covered without symptoms.  So I will need to go via the NHS but don't know where to get started.  My GP gave me an open referral but now I'm stuck.  Anyone have any experience in this space that they could share?

Cheers

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community. I'm very sorry to read that you recently lost your mum and I know what a tough time this must be for you.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and, although I'm not a member of this group, I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

I'm not sure what an "open referral" is or does but your GP should be able to tell you what you need to do to access the genetic counselling your mum's oncologist has recommended you have as they are the ones who've given you this referral.

If you can't get any further help from your GP then you could post your question about how to access genetic counselling in the ask a nurse section of the online community or, alternatively, phone the Macmillan Support Line free on 0808 808 0000 to speak to one of the nurses.

I hope you manage to access this counselling soon
