Hi there hoping someone can help as I can't sleep, I worry constantly and I am anxious constantly.
Sorry it's a long one... if you have time!
I am a 26 year old female with no known health conditions, in the last couple years I have kept relatively well excluding a couple of UTI's and I was told during an ultrasound that I had a small amount of fat around my liver, other than that I am overweight, 5ft 2 and over 15 stone. I do keep generally well though.
In terms of my family history; I have a relatively small family, however unfortunately - my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at 41, her gran on her dad's side died of bowel cancer in her 60's and her great gran (different sides of the family, not the mother of the gran who died of bowel cancer) died of "lump in the breast" at 29, so even though the link between the bowel cancer gran and breast cancer is broken as they weren't related, my mum was still related to them. My Mum has no sisters, only brothers and none of her aunts or cousins died from breast cancer, as far as I am aware, her great gran had three children, one of which was a boy and two girls, none of which I know died of cancer, they were old when they died, so as men are less likely to get cancer's as common as women are, it's hard to tell if this gene runs in my family, on my mum's mum's side no one known died of cancer. On my dad's side his dad died of bladder cancer in his late 50's and his aunt died of pancreatic cancer in her 80's. I don't know if I would be affected by the BRCA gene due to lack of females affected in my family except my mum, her gran and great gran (great breast cancer gran is not related to the bowel cancer gran) I am so confused, and I am scared regarding this.
In the last month or so, I have experienced constipation, a feeling of not necessarily urgent urination, but I feel after I pee my bladder feels dull and not 100% empty, I never felt like this 6 weeks ago. I have quite a big stomach already and when I stretch the skin it looks like fat, but I don't know how I would know if I was bloated or not? There is nothing wrong with my appetite, and I have just had a period after being off depo vera injection for months. These symptoms just aren't like me, I don't know the difference between urine urgency and frequency and if feeling like your bladder isn't fully empty is normal, I also wake up twice in the morning to pee usually, which I didn't do before.
I had a urine test, negative. I had a CA125 test which was 13 - but again I know in early stages this isn't elevated. I had a pelvic exam and the doctor said she wasn't worried, but I'm just scared she's missed something and she's only put me down for a routine transvaginal ultrasound, so it's not even urgent but these symptoms are just strange and I've read up on what the peeing could be, none of which are relating to anything I have. I don't have diabetes and I don't have a UTI, I have constipation, but I pass stools every day, and sometimes I have diarreah. No pelvic pain, still have a period, full appitite, not tired... but the urunation in the last month and change in bowel movements over the last few weeks has really worried me.
I have spoken to doctors, and they just tell me to stick to my appt, and that the only other things they can do is a full blood count for anemia and a thyroid blood test... I just feel like there's nothing else it could be!!
I don't know what to do, please help
Thank you,
Cherry
Hi Cherry, I can hear your worry loud and clear. I don't know how much I can help but I will try. It's been over 13 years since I was diagnosed, so I have limited knowledge about how OC is diagnosed these days. However, I would recommend that you go for the trans vaginal ultrasound, as this is one of the main diagnostic tools (along with the CA125 blood test) before they will move you onto the big guns (CT scan, MR scan). I would try to get another CA125 test around the same time that you have the TV scan, as this will act as a base line for any future tests. It will also tell you whether your CA125 level is the same or changing. Doubling of CA125 levels is usually a warning sign, though this can take two or three months to show. For someone women it doesn't change at all. 13 is well within the normal range (1-30). It's often less about the number and more about how and if it changes, which is why one test only tells you so much. You are very young for OC but if you have the BRCA gene, it is known to affect people at a younger than normal age. To get a BRCA test, you will need to first be referred for genetic counselling, they gather all the info about the family and this is analysed to produce a number on something called the Manchester Scale. A high number on this scale would put you in a high risk group and get you better screening. I am BRCA1+ and I get an annual MR breast scan and mammogram. When I was diagnosed with OC, you couldn't have the BRCA test unless you actually had OC or had tissue from a relative who has it. I don't know if that's still the case. It also took months and months to get the results back. Again, I don't know if that's still the case. Look, I hope this information is useful for the time being. I would go for that TV scan and try to get another CA125 test and take things from there. The last thing I want to say is that the odds of it being OC are actually rather low, and your symptoms could be explained by lots of other things, but I understand your anxiety. It's a question of managing things so that you have the answers you want, whichever way it goes. Take care, Bella x
