My mum has recently been diagnosed with stage III ovarian cancer after 3 years of being clear from bowel cancer. She’s 83, a treasure and I’m her son. We have been through the hoops of scans, diagnosis and I took her to have her 1st chemo (Carboplatin) 10 days ago. She’s physically fit (plays golf most weeks), positive and has a strong mind and faith.
I suppose I’m on here because I’d like to hear and learn of other peoples experiences. I’m also interested in anyone’s experience of Metformin. My mum is not a diabetic but I’m reading about people who are taking Metformin because of the positive research on its effect on cancer. My question is two-fold - Firstly I anticipate our consultant won’t be able to prescribe it for my mum because it’s for diabetics and so I’m wondering if this is worth pursuing and secondly I’m interested in people’s experiences with Metformin.
Thanks in anticipation and positive vibes to everyone involved here, patients and carers alike.
Hi and welcome to the online community
I'm sorry to hear that you mum has recently been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. It does seem very unfair having recovered from bowel cancer,
I'm not a member of this group so don't have any treatment experiences to share with you but I noticed that your post had gone unanswered.
I put 'metformin' into the search bar in this group but didn't find any posts that have mentioned it previously. It might be an idea to ask about it in ask a nurse and one of the specialist nurses will respond within 2 working days.
When you have a minute it would be really useful if could pop something about your mum's journey so far into your profile as it helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
