My sister has just been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Her stomach is so swollen like she is 9ths pregnant. She was told is a build up of fluid called ascites.
The fluid was drained out and was tested. They informed her it is caused by small cysts on her right ovaries and the fluid seeking through the stomach lining.
Has anyone experienced this as firstly diagnosis?
What stage were you diagnosed with?
She will be see oncology next week for further talks about treatment etc..
Feeling very worried.
Hi ang,
ive not had your sisters diagnosis but I know how worrying a cancer diagnosis can be. Your sisters treatment plan will depend on her individual circumstances so the only way to know what's happening for sure will be from the appointments with her team. It's helpful to prepare a list of questions before appointments as it's easy to forget questions when you are being bombarded with information. It also helps to write down what they tell you, as it's easy to forget what they say.
In the absence of being able to answer your question I thought I'd sign post you to some help and useful sites:
If you have a local maggies centre or cancer charity, they are there to help anyone affected by cancer so do use them, they can usually provide counselling and complementary therapies.
The eve appeal has a gynaecologist nurse specialist service that can help your sister prepare for appointments, they are at:
https://eveappeal.org.uk/supporting-you/ask-eve/
You might also find the following sites useful:
Target ovarian cancer https://www.targetovariancancer.org.uk/information-and-support/what-ovarian-cancer
Ovarian cancer action http://ovarian.org.uk
Ovacome https://www.ovacome.org.uk
This site has a section where you can ask an expert, it's at:
https://community.macmillan.org.uk/cancer_experiences/ask_the_expert/
There is a group on the site for family and friends to share experiences if you want to talk to people in a similar situation, the are at https://community.macmillan.org.uk/cancer_experiences/being_a_relative_/
Finally, the Macmillan helpline can provide help with pretty much anything you want to talk about or if your sister needs practical support, it's available on 0808 808 0000.
lots of love and please let us know how you get on.

Hi,
My mum was diagnosed due to ascites in july 2016. She was diagnosed stage 4. She had it drained and then it came back so you had a semi permanant drain fitter so she could do it hersel at home. She had 6 chemos then hysterectomy and debulking and then 2 more chemo and since then hasnt had ascites again.
She has had two reoccurances. First one they used caelyx which had horrible side effects and wasnt particularly good. She is now on a trial at the Royal Marston in London which seems to be doing good so far.
Feel free to pm me if u have any questions x
Hi AngS,
This is exactly why I went to the doctors due to bloating (and also looking 9 months pregnant) my first doctors appt was 28th June, which lead to a lot of scans which showed cysts on my ovaries and ascites.
Had it drained twice now, totally 20L of fluid and currently waiting for treatment. I understand how worrying it can be as I am worrying the same but make sure she has any questions she has at her appts.
Wishing her all the best.
Hi
please let me know what kind of trial has your mum ?
