I had lower rectal bowel cancer last year. It was was operated on successfully removed including a margin and some lymph node. I had chemotherapy which finished less than a year ago. Now after getting my fitness back it has been discovered by a routine scan that the cancer has spread to my lymph nodes in my pelvis. The lymph node is attached to a muscle for added complication. I have been offered surgery which will involve a large incision and probable damage to the leg afterwards. I also have been offered Sabr Radiotherapy. Please does anyone have advise on Sabr and possible other treatments?

  • Hi , I’m sorry to hear about your diagnosis and the current choice your having to make for treatment, for me making the right choice for me brought a lot of concern.

I hope someone comes forward with their own relevant experience for you if not here in the Bowel (colon and rectal) cancer forum that you’ve joined. The Ask a Nurse, section where Macmillan’s nurses can help or the Macmillan support line 0808 808 0000 may also help with running over your choices.

My choice and cancer type isn’t the same so I can’t help with the specifics, I’ve not had radiotherapy of any kind. I did find that my specialist cancer nurse good for talking things through after I had spoken to the surgeon and oncologist, as she had been to the MDT(multi disciplinary team meeting) that they had both been to so had heard what points were put across to recommend either way, for me it was wether to have full groin node dissection or just continue on immunotherapy (which isn’t an option for all cancers). I was able to discuss my concerns and let her explain the pros and cons of each action again, and tell her my concerns. We want to be involved with treatment choices but also a part of me wanted them to make the decision, but I suppose they need the input of us wanting to live the best life possible versus the best chance for a longer life and sometimes the two collide in a no best answer fits all.
