Hello all, just looking for some help/advice for my lovely mum. She's just had her 2nd chemo/immuno on Monday and is so washed out and tired. I am encouraging her to eat more (if she can) and given her a list of good foods to keep the calories and energy up. She takes a shot of wheatgrass each day and she said this has helped her.
She is really struggling with the tiredness and lack of energy, and i don't honestly know what to suggest to her, it is so hard seeing her like this. We know treatment will make her feel like this, but is there anything that can honestly help? She said her legs feel weak at times too. Must be so hard for her as she has always been such an active woman, and i know this is emotionally getting her down too.
Mum has been more teary and a little angry, i'm not sure if this is all hitting her now, along with her needle phobia taking over her more now? I fully understand she has so many emotions going on right now, i just don't really know what more i can do to help?
I've been taking meals to my parents and some baked goodies. I've told them to leave chores for me to do or help with too, especially when mum is so exhausted.
I keep telling her it won't be like this forever, and i hope there is some truth in this. We are just on this path and learning/experiencing more about SCLC, so still grasping how treatment is going/side effects etc.

Let your mum eat whatever she wants. Chemotherapy alters your sense of taste and a lot of things taste either metallic or like cardboard during the week after treatment. Additionally, many people get some degree of mucositis at some point each treatment cycle.
If your mum is having chemo she may well be on steroids, which can affect mood dramatically. It's worth mentioning to her chemo team.
I wasn't offered a port because my schedule chemo only 6 cycles. I ended up having a lot more cannulas than anyone anticipated between one thing and another and if I ever needed chemotherapy again I would insist on a port from the outset.
If your mum isn't seeming a little better towards the end of each cycle then her team needs to know.
Hello Lolie, thank you for replying.
She said her mouth has that metallic taste at the moment, but she just has no appetite, that's my worry that she isn't really eating much and wondered if this was adding to her feeling weak. She hasn't mentioned any soreness in her mouth. I have made her some smoothie packs and put them in her freezer, she just needs to add milk/water, trying to do little bits that may help her.
She is on steroids, i think only a few days after treatment, but never thought about them possibly affecting her mood, i will get mum to mention this to her chemo team.
Mum is only having 6 cycles too, i think i will see if she wants to discuss the picc line thing with her nurse again, i don't really think there are many alternative issues, i just don't want her fear of needles becoming the reason she stops treatment.
Her last cycle, she felt tired but this one even more so and just before she's due her next one, she gets more energy. So it's not constant. I tell her to keep a list of issues and let her chemo nurse know too.
