Lung cancer

Have just finished 3 weeks of radiotherapy for stage 3 lung cancer.  Everything was going fine until Wednesday, then got so much pain along oesophagus, but not when I had eaten which is usually the case.  Saw a senior nurse who prescribed a liquid to take 30 mins before eating and a paracetamol liquid to take 4 times a day.

It does hurt when I eat but also when I get up in the morning and during the day when not been eating and oesophagus is thribbing all the time.

Has anybody else had this, and what did they do.

Thanks

  • Hi

I had radiotherapy for upper left lung cancer just over two year's ago, I had eight sessions over two and a half weeks of SABR radiotherapy as it was only stage 1 and measured 2.5cm.  The lesion was close to my chest wall and oesophagus and I did have pain even when not eating in my oesophagus, bit like heartburn, although I did not take hospital medication for it.  Now, I have discomfort and mild pain in my ribs in the area treated, and sometimes a bit of discomfort when swallowing, but this is only very solid food, although this is very rarely as time passes.  It is to be expected and a side effect of radiotherapy unfortunately.

Many year's ago I had six weeks of daily radiotherapy for right sided breast cancer, and, apart from oesophageal discomfort, I had the same side effects, i.e. rib pain and tenderness.

I think you will find other replies to your query will say roughly the same regarding radiotherapy side effects, especially if the area being treated is close to the oesophagus.

    Regards.
