Partial Nephrectomy

Hi

I had a tumour removed and a partial nephrectomy of my left kidney on the 19th November 2020 (robotic surgery). My tumour was found by accident, as I believe many are found, when I had a scan for pelvic and groin pain.

On the 15th December, my 57th birthday, I had a telephone consultation with my consultant. I was initially thrilled when he said I didn’t need any follow up treatment. The tumour was small and he is confident he got it all with good markers.

However, as I contemplate the whole conversation, he did say that it was cancer and not benign as I had hoped. I will be monitored and have a scan in 6 months.  He said that it was a T1 stage 3 tumour. I have spoken to the CNS team to try and clarify what this means in real terms and they were helpful. I think T1 is good but stage 3 not so good?

i am a positive person and I hope to return to work in January, have a scan in June followed by annual scans and live to a ripe old age enjoying my husband of 38 years, my 3 children and their partners and my 9 grandchildren.

I would love to hear from some of you who have been where I am now and are many years in the future from your diagnosis? This would fuel my positivity no end.

Thanks

Sutt

  • Hi  and a welcome to the Kidney cancer group from me, the Community champ for this group.

I had a full nephrectomy in 2005 n am still around to tell the tale.

I've been on  Pazopanib for several years with a 3.5 year gap from  2016 to 2019.  I've also had various metastatic episodes, which is when I started on the Pazopanib. I tend to have scans every 3 to 4 months.

More info on my profile if you're interested.

The main thing is I'm still here n intend to b for a good while yet. When I had my op I  was the breadwinner n had a young son of 10. He's now a strapping six footer of 25.

I've been married for 40 years

    Take heart !

    Love n hugs

    Sue x

  • Hi Sutt

I would have a scan at least every 8 weeks , even if you have to pay, it’s important to address any spread sooner rather than later. I have had tumors in lung, brain, adrenal gland, pelvic bone, and rib bone after my kidney removal.

    good luck

    Hi sutt

I am in the progress of going to have a partial nephrectomy on my left kidney so not as far as you are at this stage, they did tell me that I was going to have a full kidney removal at 1 stage till they had a meeting with urologist at another hospital where they decided it is best to do a partial nephrectomy which they found a lesion on the same kidney and they will deal with that too, im glad to be reading up on someone who has had the same thing as I am going to be having hopefully in January 2021,
