Hi all,

I had a partial nephrectomy in May 2020 then had to go for the full removal in October.
I am recovering well and will be back in work early December.
I wanted to know (I didn’t ask my consultant) is it ok to drink beer?
I am not a big drinker anyhow these days but tend to go out once every 3 months or so and have 5 or 6 pints. Am I ok to do this or should I knock it on the head?
I am not overweight and do get regular exercise.
Aogies if this is going over previously asked questions but I can’t seem to find it in any forum history.

I'm afraid I don't have the answer to your question but would also be interested.

I used to be a big drinker but had managed to significantly reduce it about a year before my diagnosis. Drinking was much reduced in the time leading up to my nephrectomy as it seemed like a good idea.

I really expected to be given some 'advice' about drinking when I was in the hospital but not a word was said.

My surgery was now two and a half months ago and I have had a drink on only four occasions in that time, about six pints one time and about half that amount on the other three occasions. I haven't had anything at all for nearly a month now. I'm feeling much less inclined to have a drink but I wouldn't say I've given up, it will happen from time to time.

I'm sure that drinking less must be a good thing but the question is really is it OK to indulge occasionally? I'm certainly concerned to look after my solitary soldier as well as I can.

On the occasions that I did have a drink I certainly found that it took longer than before to produce the amount of urine commensurate with the alcohol consumption but I guess that, in part at least, is due to the adjustment process to operating with only one kidney.

I'm guessing that the rule might be something like 'occasionally is OK but not too much or too often', much the same as with two kidneys really although it might well be less now.

I'd be interested to hear any professional advice.

  • I have just had this discusion with my Mrs. I had my operation a laprascopic nephrectomy two weeks ago on Thursday. I am easing of the pain killers and trying to exercise for around thirty minutes a day( just walking). Does anybody know if it is ok to go out for a meal and drink.on Friday? Which will be 15 days after my operation.
