When does food taste normal again?

Hi all

Can I ask anyone with tongue and neck cancer, how long after RT does it take for food to taste normal and your appetite return to normal?

I’ve reached my 4th month after RT and managing small amounts of food but have no appetite and nothing tastes nice which is so frustrating

  • Hi Sue my taste returned about three weeks post treatment but my desire  and appetite took  many months to return. I’m a year post now and have been eating normally for several months. I can’t say my appetite is fully returned but I do enjoy my food more

  • I have to watch what I eat. I need to lose 5 pounds and they won’t budge. Serious calorie counting here

  • This is interesting as I’m 12 months post. Chicken unless it’s in a stew is a no go especially the breast. Mince tastes gravelly and I tried some with more fat and I still don’t like it.

in can eat fish but no salmon. Venison is too dry. Spare ribs and haggis are great and I enjoy both. Still prefer vegetarian. The joy of cooking is slowly returning but I do buy a fair bit of  vegetarian  meals from M&S.

i don’t like snacking and off chocolate. I was off French fries but that’s coming back slowly.

I need spicy food and tend to over do that. I also cook with cream which really helps the food taste better. My German roots coming out.

I love orzo and make roast vegetables to go with it and a dash of cream.

I’m loving freshly squeezed orange juice with mango .

Off to the USA in ten days time. Looking forward to seeing family but not the faff of eating.   I’m taking packets of Yfood and huel with me

  • ‘The faff of eating’. Love it.  That sums up my view exactly.  I too am going more and more veggie as my tolerance of  meat….with the honourable exception of rare fillet steak…is diminishing. Completely agree about mince….although in M&S lasagne I can eat it.  Weird or what?

My mother always hated cooking and said she was looking forward to the day when all food was in the form of pills.  I’m beginning to think she had a point!

    Enjoy your holiday.

  • I don’t know about turning corners…certainly feels sometimes as if I’m going round the bend!

I do still cook: my husband lived on ready meals for ages during and in the immediate aftermath of my treatment…and got thoroughly fed up with them. I even eat some of it and live to tell the tale.

I don’t let my lack of enthusiasm for food stop me going out to restaurants or ‘eating’ with friends.  Everywhere I have been has been very happy to help: smaller portions, warm drink…whatever without any fuss or bother.

Not sure that cutting out the high calorie drinks would make a lot of difference  to appetite…it doesn’t for me…but we’re all different so you might find it helps.

I’ve sent you a friend request. It would be good to keep in touch as we are at similar stages and experiencing similar issues.  I hope you too get back to something closer to normal soon.

  • Not yet but thanks for the tip, I’ll give it a go x

    See profile for treatment stages

  • Yes it’s interesting how mince is tolerable in some cases like lasagna. I’ll try their lasagna. Thank you

Yfoods and Huel were a staple filler until recently. I find I get bored halfway through a meal

  • It’s the ‘normal’ lasagne I get on with.  The ‘best ever’ version for me just isn’t!

Know what you mean about getting bored half way through a meal.  If I don’t, my throat and swallowing certainly seem to.  Hey ho.

  • Great. I will look it for it. This evening we’re going to a Burns dinner and I have a choice of regular haggis or veg haggis. Now I really have a choice as I actually like haggis and it goes down well. Choices choices JoyJoyJoy

Personally I would plump for the Veggie Haggis, rarer species and much harder to catch
