Got an ENT telephone appointment next week not in person as I thought - is this normal to discuss treatment plan or is it really bad news?

I got my biopsy results back last Thursday which showed cancer and had my scans on Monday. The consultant said they would review the scans today. I've just got an appointment through the nhs app which says I have a telephone appointment with the ENT consultant Next Wednesday - is this normal, I thought it would be a multi team meeting. Now really worried it's bad bad news. Anyone else had this?

  • Hi Coco cat. I had a face to face with my ENT Consultant to receive the bad news from the biopsies. Had CT & MRI done and reviewed by that time too. Then I had a MDT meeting the next day to meet the people/depts that would be involved in my Tr. The next ENT appt was actually a mistake when I questioned it.

It's unlikely that you would receive bad, bad news over the phone. And whilst different trusts operate differently, I was passed from ENT to ONC once my diagnosis was confirmed. Is there no contact you could ring and make enquires from.

  • Hi. The MDT comprises all the specialists involved in cancer care. They comprise in no particular order Dentist Oncologist Radiologist ENT Surgeon Maxillofacial Pathologist Dietician Speech and Language and CNS. They all meet regularly to discuss all the patients in their care. Us patients are not part of the MDT.
My first oncology appointment was to confirm that I had cancer and to sign the consent form. Then I was passed to the dental team to have my dental review. I had a couple of prehab counselling meeting with MacMillan and a dietician SALT appointment before I started but those were in other days.
I agree with Petlamb. You’re unlikely to get bad news over the phone though I actually did in a roundabout sort of way. I would check up that it is actually not a F2F.

  • Hi. I would check that it’s not a mistake as it’s unusual in early diagnosis stage  for a phone call to explain your treaty. Unless ent are like mine  passing you on to another cancer centre to meet with oncologist? I had biopsy but we knew I had scc cancer pre biopsy in my tonsil. The next day I got a phone call to ask me to attend Leeds cancer centre 2 days later.
    good luck

  • I tried to call this afternoon but just an automatic response to say they were busy and couldn't answer the phone. I'll try again tomorrow to check. Many thanks for your reply
