Dry Mouth (Again, Sorry)

Hello Everyone,

As the regulars here will know, I completed 30 (successful) sessions of RT and the end of July 2021 but my mouth is still not able to cope with much solid food at all.

After a recent visit to the Restorative Dentistry Clinic at Dundee Dental Hospital, the consultant gave my mouth a thorough inspection and stated that my saliva was quite thick. As I had tried all the other options of gels and sprays, he said that there was a further treatment available, but they would need to discuss it with my Oncology Team first. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I was not given any specifics and I did not ask as I just wanted to get out after a whole hour with my mouth wide open.

Take Care,
Bob

  • Hi Bob. I’ve absolutely no idea. I wish you’d asked. Joy
    Unless he’s thinking of acupuncture.
    Do ring them.
How’s  things apart from that ?
I know I’ve suggested chewing gum before but do you know if using it makes you salivate?
All I have to do is pop a piece in my mouth and my one surviving parotid goes mad! For a while.

  • Thanks Dani,

I have tried the whole gamut of suggestions, but nothing seems to help. I do have saliva, but it is quite dense or thick or heavy - if you know what I mean - but nothing to break down any food. Still very much reliant on Soups, Weetabix (Tesco's own), Coffee, Tea, Water and Desserts with lashings of Custard.

I have an appointment at the Dental Hospital again on Friday and I will ask for more details then.

    Onwards & Upwards,
    Bob

  • Hi Bob there is a prescription medicine pilocarpine I onky know one person who tried it she stopped as it made her sweat from every pore which wasn’t ideal. But  it may nit be be that do let us know what they suggest I did have auricular acupuncture which for me kick started my saliva glands. Hope  you get sorted.

Yes, I'd forgotten about Pilocarpine. It's used routinely for Sjögren's syndrome but has side effects. These might disappear as the body gets used to them or might not. It seems to be quite commonly used in the USA post RT

  • Just had a look on Wikipedia and that Pilocarpine sounds scary. Mind you, nothing can be more scary than RT.

  • Pilocarpine sounds scary

Yes it does....the side effects are all alarming

Have you tried a slow cooker...cook a lamb casserole in one? That might be easier to swallow

  • I have tried many different meat recipes but, after the first morsel passes the oropharynx, it is like the Sahara and nothing else will pass. The best was slow-cooked chicken with loads of soft gravy, that went down OK for 2-3 mouthfuls. I have plenty of liquids available including water and Ensure Shakes with every meal.

  • Hi Bob. Have you been offered a swallow evaluation?

    Thanks Dani,

Who would ask to process this for me? I have Dental this week, Oncology mid-November and Dietician mid-December or would it be GP Practice?

    Bob

  • Contact your CNS so that your oncologist and dietician are briefed before your next appointments. I just thought of this when you said you could get a mouthful down then not any more. Maybe the issue is with your swallowing rather than the saliva because, after all, you are chasing your food down with liquid and that's still not working.

Do keep us in the loop
