Hi All

Hope everyone is well.  Just a quick question about Ensure, Fortisip supplements etc.,  - how long appoximately did everyone find they had to use them to boost calories.  Also has anyone found a low sugar alternative that is drinkable to use instead?  I can drink them but the sugar content is so high I worry about my teeth!

Thanks in advance.

Sue

  • Yes, there should be a health warning on them re tooth decay. I used to rinse my mouth out with water after each Fortisip. I kept using mine until about Week 8 post treatment, when they ran out and I was beginning to gain weight. But everyone is different, eg I didn’t  lose much weight in the first place and wasn’t given a feeding tube.

  • Hi Sue, I probably had them for 4 weeks- the dentist said to rinse my mouth out after drinking them. I never found a low sugar alternative - everything tasted so awful!

  • Hi Sue. I had them for nine weeks in total. I kept some for the days when I wasn’t eating well. Nowadays I have them for days when we go walking and rather than take sandwiches which necessitate me flossing and brushing teeth I have a Fortisip and just rinse my mouth out with water and BioXtra.

  • Hi Sue , i know the feeling well, you could try savoury ones, i found Aymes to be quite tasty they do three flavours and it comes in powder form, there are other companies who make it as well maybe your dietician can sort something out. I was told they are sweet because it hides the taste of all vitimins etc. I wash my mouth out with mouthwash to help combat the sugar damaging my teeth, i hope you manage to find a solution, take care.

  • Chris, do you mind me asking what mouthwash you use? I’ve not been given one on prescription and am trying to find the best one for both upping my fluoride and rinsing my teeth between brushings. I’m 12 weeks post treatment and haven’t been given indication  as to whether I’ll see a hospital dentist or not. Due to Covid I’m guessing.

  • Mark....sorry to butt in

BioXtra has 1500 ppm of fluoride which is higher than I have seen in any other and you might be able to persuade your GP to give you it on script

  • Thanks Dani. I’ll give it a try.

  • Thanks everyone.  Going to give the BioXra a try too - I was given fluorigard by the dental hospital but it hasn't got that kind of level of fluoride.  I was also told to just brush my teeth 2-3 times a day and use the mouthwash for the other times.  Anyone else been told this too?

    Thanks

    Sue

  • Hi Sue

I was prescribed Biotene mouthwash to use as and when during the day plus Endokay mouthwash just to be used at night after cleaning and Durophat toothpaste.

I already used floss and tepes so was told to continue using them without fail.
