Hi Folks,

I don't often post, so apologies if this has been raised before.  If not, I hope it might help.

My husband was diagnosed with tonsil cancer in 2019 - T3N2b/1 (TNM7/8)M0 and received chemo/radiotherapy treatment.  Thankfully, he got his all clear last August, but he still has a couple of side effects of the treatment, the worst of which is his inability to produce saliva.  It is particularly bad at night in bed - his mouth is so dry he feels as if he is choking and of course there has been nights where sleep is minimal and we are both exhausted the next day.

However, completely by accident (thanks to Covid restrictions I was early for an appointment and went into a chemist to kill time), I found a product called Xylimelts, which is a small tablet he puts in his mouth at night.  The tablet dissolves and coats his mouth, and he now gets to sleep.  We were lucky enough to go on holiday to Greece last  month and the mouth dryness was his biggest fear, but these little tablets helped so much at night and we managed to have a great holiday.

Best Wishes,

Tracy

  • Hi Loftyboy.  Originally I got them in Lloyds chemist.  I ordered them from Amazon on 26th Sept and I’ve just checked - they are showing as available.

    Best wishes.

  • Hi Tracy. It is so frustrating. Funnily enough, I can eat tiny amounts of all meats chicken/red but, the fattier or greasier the better. Hot is better than cold which is when the texture changes and casseroled better than grilled too. It can be very frustrating and hubby gets upset when I can't get my head around a dish. I feel for him and you cos it isn't easy trying to second guess this rollercoaster food ride. My consultant and dietician have both said up to 2 years (possibly slightly longer) will be where your taste buds plateau, so there is room for improvement. I finished treatment early november last year, so just coming up to a year post. I managed spag bol for the first time the other night (mince was like dry ball bearings a month ago) and a small portion of lasagne, so that truly put a smile on my face.

    Fingers crossed for improvements.

  • Hi

Has anyone got any tips on the xylimelts? I feel like it's a brick in my mouth so haven't yet managed to leave 1 in place. Any weird techniques? And has anyone used 1 during the day as I am not sure about mild mint flavour paired with an apricot Thinking

  • Not tried one in the day but maybe stick it as far back as it will go over a wisdom tooth. It should disappear in your cheek that way?

I find chewing gum in the day far better to get the saliva going

I always put the Xylimelt in place (top jaw near the back over a back molar/gum)when I start to read. Then I don’t notice the Xylimelts as I go to sleep. They make such a huge difference to my sleep - never wake up with a dry mouth any more. So I would say worth persevering.

I have tried them during the day, but as you are more active, they tend to dissolve fairly quickly. Like Dani I use sugar free gum during the day. I usually park half a piece over the last molars. The flavour slowly releases and stimulates my saliva for hours. Essential for long walks, cycles, car journeys and working behind a mask!

I’m sure others will have different tips, but xylimelts and gum improve the quality of my life significantly.

    Good Luck!

  • Thank you guys. I had my wisdom teeth taken out prior to treatment so maybe that has changed my mouth shape a little. I will persevere and try gum too.

  • Hi Piya10

I put one Xylimelt on the gum under one of my left lower molars at night and it works really well and stays in place. I use the mild mint ones.

When I walk with my daughters I put one in the same place as my mouth gets so dry otherwise while exercising. It does feel a bit big to begin with but melts down fairly quickly. I do not have any trouble talking with it in my mouth and it may feel big but does not seem to be noticeable to anyone else.

Try a few different places in your mouth to see where it works best for you and persevere as you do get used to the sensation of it in your mouth.

  • Hi Piya10

My husband had 5 teeth taken out prior to treatment, but they left his wisdom teeth alone.  His wisdom tooth has now started to come through which has turned out to be a blessing as he now has no molars at all.

He normally puts the Xylimelt in his mouth at the front where he has teeth.  Its not ideal but the discs have made such a difference to his life.  Alternatively, he positions it beside the wisdom tooth.  The tooth is still a bit small but if it gets bigger then it should work OK.

Keep perservering and hopefully you will find what works for you.

    Best Wishes
