Halfway done!

Hello....my husband has his second Cisplatin dose today, and then aftEr tomorrow’s radiation treatment, he will be half way done with those!! He’s really doing well......the chemo has probably been the worst for him. Really knocked him down for about 4 days after the last one. The doctors are now having him come in for extra IV Fluids for hydration on a regular basis, 3 days per week after radiation. One extra thing to do, but not really a big deal as it only takes about an hour. He seems to be on a pretty good sleep schedule again....right after chemo, he was just really tired. Still eating mostly normal food, with the exception of anything really crunchy. I do supplement his diet with a really high protein, caloric dense smoothie daily, and almost 3 weeks in he hasn’t lost any weight ( he does not have a PEG tube). He’s actually a little disappointed in the non weight loss thing! RoflHe thinks he can stand to lose a few! He has a small amount of discomfort when swallowing larger pieces of things. No dry mouth yet, but taste is nearly gone for now. So overall, he would say treatment is going pretty well......definitely know the intensity will ramp up, however.

Thanks to all of you who have given us information! This forum is an amazing comfort, and I sure hope to help those going through this in the future. Many  of you encouraged us that this was doable, and you’ve been so right. I know the hardest part is still  probably to come, but it’s still doable! And all the words of comfort on this forum has helped me to encourage my husband in that.

Thanks again to everyone on here who reached out with advice! Much appreciated!

  • Hi Elizabeth ()

Sounds like your hubby is doing amazingly well.

My hubby had 30 RT and 6 Cisplatin. It was about week 3 his weight started to fall off and that continued for several weeks after treatment so you can tell your hubby there’s time yet!

Ken is actually pleased with his weight loss as he was about 2-3 stone overweight anyway and that’s how much he has lost. I keep telling him though that it was a bit of a drastic way to lose weight!!!

    Keep us posted.

  • Good evening Elizabeth, thanks for this encouraging update, perhaps your husband will be like me and will not suffer as bad with the side effects although i had to use my PEG that was mainly due to the surgery as my swallowing was impaired. I'm sure if he stays focused with a positive attitude the results will show. That's a first about being disappointed about not losing weight as its normally the other way around Slight smile. I'm pleased this group has helped you and your husband, must admit there are some great people on here that help make this group  (head and neck) a friendly informative place to come. Fingers crossed for the second half of treatment, best wishes, take care.

  • Hi Elizabeth

Glad to hear things are going far better than you prepared yourselves for.  Fingers crossed that the same happens during the last half of his treatment.
