Hi all hope your all doing well, has anyone had hypnosis to help with eating as I’m struggling at the moment, I still can’t eat meat, fish, biscuits or cake etc, even with lots of gravy/sauce,I’ve got to the stage where I dread meal times,I’m never hungry, and although my husband keeps on at me about eating I only see it as him going on at me, I do try very hard to try other foods but just seem to keep choking, sorry for the whinging, but would be grateful if anyone has any information that might help.

Hi Shirley
how far into recovery are you ? I am 21 month post radiotherapy for tonsil cancer with several affected lymph nodes and I still find many meats difficult to eat. the cheaper cuts use some to be ok but now they tend to stick give me a rib eye or a lamb steak some rare and I am ok .
nit tried or heard of hypnosis but it did have 6 acupuncture sessions for dry mouth and now I would say my saliva is 95% during day time nighttime still use an xyimelt .i
i now have to dunk biscuits in coffee never dunked before but needs must ,I could do soft poached egg s in well buttered toast or with a mashed avocado then put egg on top
hooe this helps

Hi Shirley. Sorry you’re still having trouble.
How far are you from the end of treatment. Is it two years or have I got the dates from your last post wrong ?

Hi hazel I’m 24 months in recovery and don’t seem to be improving at all, I’m doing eggs and really soft food, my dry mouth in day isn’t too bad but like you use the xymelt at night which I thought hypnosis might help.
hope all goes well for you in future and improves for you.

Hi dani yes it’s 2 years and really though I’d be seeing some sort of improvement by now, I’m getting slightly depressed with the lack of interest I seem to have in food at moment, which is why I thought maybe hypnotherapy might help, hope your doing well.

If you have little difficulty in actually chewing and swallowing food but rather a mental disinterest in it then give it a go. You’re not going to lose anything
If you can’t swallow then maybe there is some scarring or narrowing down there due to the RT?
when is your next check up due? It may be worth mentioning

Hi Shirley
Unfortunately problems with swallowing can be an ongoing issue for some people after treatment for head and neck cancer so you're not alone.
I agree with Dani. If your difficulties are due to the mechanics of swallowing and you're choking on your food you need to mention this to your team. They can do a swallow test involving a special xray which will help them find what's causing the problem.
Good luck.
