Hi all, I'm 5month post chemo radiotherapy for base of tongue and lymph node at first review still something at base of tongue so repeat MRI was ordered I have been having same symptoms scratchy throat as before diagnosis so was getting concerned I had scan yesterday I just got call from my specialist nurse to say a urgent CT PET is needed does this mean they no cancer is still there or is active again I'm beyond scared as with this current situation with covid 19 will they be able to operate treat it I feel like I cant go through it all again any advice thank you .
Hi Bradlou Sorry that you’ve found yourself in this position, only advice I can give you is the pet cat scan will show if any active cancer cells are there as well as on the positive side if there aren’t any active cells .Remember you’ve been through this already the waiting is defiantly the worst part. Am sure one or two like @chris2012 and MikeO will be along with some sound advice.

Bradlou I think five months is really a relatively short period of time, you will have RT damage still so scans can pick up all sorts of stuff that might well be just scar tissue; my voice is still scratchy six years down the line. It's good that your team are acting quickly to err on the safe side but I'd really try not to worry too much just yet. Easy to say I know, feel for you.
Metastatic SCC diagnosed 8th October 2013. Modified radical neck dissection November, thirty-five radiotherapy fractions with 2xCisplatin chemo Jan/Feb 2014. Recurrence on larynx diagnosed July 2020 so salvage laryngectomy in September 2020.
Hi Bradlou , my fist cancer was in a similar area, it's obvious that the MRI scan has picked something up and they want to get better views of by using the CT scan, this should give them a clearer understanding of whats going on, as MikeO said scar tissue is a common find and I can second that. Five months is quite early to suspect anything sinister, this scan should show up any abnormalities and from what they find a diagnosis will be given. Fingers crossed for a clear scan, as you say its not the best time at the moment. Not sure if I told all of you on here but I was 100% convinced that my cancer had returned again as the symptoms I was showing was virtually the same, even my experienced consultant was concerned due to my history which was not the best on record. Anyway, he sent me for an x-ray of my mouth /teeth area and could see two cavities in my top teeth which were causing the problem, we both were so relieved. So maybe yours will have a simple explanation, we hope so. Best wishes and all the best for the scan. Take care.
