Hello everyone I have recently joined this group. I have a question regarding the effect on immunity when lymph nodes have been removed. I had a mouth cancer successfully removed in January 2019 and lymph nodes In my neck were removed for testing. Thankfully the results showed they were clear. With the current crisis I am concerned that this has an adverse effect on my immune system.

  • Hello Neil. I actually don't have a definitive answer to this but my feeling would be possibly not.

    Basing this purely on the fact that I'm not on the "free flu vaccine" list and I'd have thought if my immune system was reduced I would be; I could be wrong. If nobody here knows for sure try giving the Macmillan helpline a call, sure they'll know. Number is 0808 808 00 00 but they're not open until Monday morning now. Let us know what you find out.

    Than you MikeO. I did read that lymph nodes regenerate so I am not overly worried. I am sure my GP will be in touch if there was a problem. Greatly appreciate your response.

  • I had mine removed in January this year.  I asked and was told that removal would not affect my immune system.

    Thank you Peter that’s very reassuring. Regards. Neil.

  • Your immunity will be fine.
    immune cells are produced in your bone marrow and matured in the lymph nodes.
    There are around 300  lymph nodes in your neck in five levels and It’s highly unlikely that you have had them all removed anyway .
    You have gazillions dotted  around your body.
    What will affect your immunity is very recent chemotherapy and radiotherapy

  • I asked a similar question last week and also emailed the Lymphoedema Support Network -  lsn.org.uk

    They replied with;

    "In and of itself the lymphoedema will not make you more susceptible to the virus which is good news, however you may be more susceptible due to your cancer treatment and if you still have compromised swallowing."
