Hi, not entirely sure why I came to stumble on this website tonight, but now wish I had joined months ago. Looking through various discussions it looks to be so supportive.
Before I head off to bed I’m going to throw out one question .....Have any of you had to cope with the combination of alcohol dependency as well as the cancer diagnosis and treatment? Having been treated for tonsil cancer in early 2018, and now alcohol-free for nearly 10 months ( yes, a rather delayed action) I have so many mixed/ confused feelings about where I am now. Only 4 months ago I was back in hospital with neck oedema, difficulty swallowing, weight loss....An attempted biopsy under GA landed me with an emergency tracheostomy! A hugely abnormal MRI pointed convincingly to cancer, but after a long series of normal biopsy results and I have gradually returned to ‘normal’. No treatment, but no answer as to the cause.
I’d love to hear from anyone who recognises any similarities in this brief history of my experiences (so far).
Good night folks, Janey F
Hi Jamey
welcome to the club that no one really wants to join! Glad you’ve come through treatment and now on other side . I personally haven’t got any experience with alcohol dependency as I more or less stopped drinking over 12 years ago apart from the occasional drink which in my case was April 2018 as I was diagnosed in May I had one gin and tonic whist in holiday .i just have no tolerance couldn’t stand the headaches and now my mouth is delicate no way is anything stronger than water passing my lips.
Re your later problems I know of a few who have had similar issues all have been scarring in neck and throat area all have been like you given the all clear after being put through the ringer with waiting for results nd time round.

Hi Janey
it’s wonderful that you are making an effort after all you’ve been through
My first husband was an alcoholic and smoked heavily. He ended up at the age of 47 having laryngeal cancer which did not respond to treatment so he had a laryngectomy. He stopped smoking, obviously but refused help for his alcohol problem. I’m so glad you have done something about it. All I might suggest is that you keep up with your support groups but I’m sure you are doing that.
Kindest regards and good luck.
