I had a PICC fitted for my treatment, it is a very quick procedure with no pain. They will dress it and then tell him how to look after it ( very easy to look after). Do ask them for a waterproof arm band, so he can have a shower or bath without getting it wet.

oh thankyou so much for the reply he’s nervous as has had a few procedures where he was told it shouldn't hurt but it was agony for him. 

Hi Kerry, i have PICC lines before but only while i was in hospital, i never had any pain from it and to be honest it came in handy as it can be used for drips, taking blood , chemotherapy etc rather than keep putting catheters in all the time. Mine was 11 years ago so I expect things have improved since then. All the best, take care.
