Hi everyone

Does anyone have any advice or experience regarding the HPV vaccination?

My husband’s tonsil cancer is HPV positive and was wondering if I should be vaccinated.

No one has mentioned or discussed this with us.

  • Hi Sharon and Ken

The NHS has a very good online article  called HPV Vaccine Overview which explains very clearly about who should have the vaccine and at what age.

Basically it's for people under the age of 25 who may not have had any close intimate contact.

    Hope you find it helpful.

  • Agree with Linda ,it’s not offered to our other half’s as  the effectiveness is prior to having sexual relations which is why it’s now offered to 12/13 year olds girls and now boys . And selective under 25 s at anytime 84% of the worlds population has the h p v virus majority of people their bodies naturally get rid of it over a 2 year period your hubby like me was one of the unlucky one whose turned into head and neck cancer There’s is no known test that tells whether anyone at a moment in time has the virus  until it mutates if that makes sense  . As explained to me and hubby via my oncologist when I was diagnosed in 2018 an now 16 month post radiotherapy and living life to the full.

    hope this helps

  • Thanks both for your very helpful replies.

I thought that would be the case but I was certain I’d read on here about someone paying for the HPV jab in similar circumstances.

It makes sense though, that it won’t work.

I’ll cross this off my list of things to worry about.

  • Do you know Sharon I’m going to go against the common consensus here. The vaccine is offered or about to be to “men who have sex with men” irrespective of age according to my oncologist. I asked about getting my 34 year old daughter vaccinated which is what brought the subject up. If you can afford the £450 it will cost you in Boots then do it and forget it.

  • Hi Hazel

FDA has approved its use for folk up to 45 years old

Gardisil 9 protects against nine strains, all potentially causing cancer (but not all in the throat) If you have been infected by one strain it will still protect you against the others.

I might suggest a walk in clinic in a major town rather than Boots if they have refused. It might well be a complete waste of time......on the other hand, it might well not.

Hi, I was/am in the same boat. I asked my consultant the same question as soon as I was diagnosed. He was clear that “if she’s gonna get it, she’s got it” so no point vaccinating. Bear in mind the majority of the population (80%+) has HPV. It’s just a small % where the virus leads to cancer.

vaccination is most effective before one is sexually active, hence the universal vaccination of early teenage girls, and more recently teenage boys.

apparently GPs have been vaccinating their own teenage boys privately for a decade.

FWIW since my own illness we were exploring options for my son (aged 23). The vaccine is £450 at Boots or Superdrug. I sent him to our family GP. In the circumstances she agreed to prescribe it. As this is outside of the national programme it’s been a bit of an adventure. He had to store the vaccine in the fridge and get it injected at the local flu jab clinic.

    hope this helps
