Hi all! New to the board so hope I'm posting in the right place :-)

I had a gyny appointment yesterday, after being referred by my GP due to ongoing pelvic pain and irregular periods. I had an internal ultrasound in January, where they found what they believe is a cyst on my cervix. My last smear was 2.5yrs ago and all normal.

The gyny decided to examine my cervix whilst I was there, as last year I had 3 occasions of spotting between cycles and then my periods completely stopped from November (I'm only 27). She said she couldn't see anything and thinks the cyst may be inside the cervix.

She said that for my piece of mind and also due to my symptoms, she would send me for a colposcopy, but that she didn't think it was anything to worry about.

Of course I am worried and have no idea what to expect.

Could anyone share their experiences of a colposcopy and any abnormal symptoms that they may have had? Should I really not be worried?

Thank you xx

  • Hi mumble,

I haven't had a colposcopy but I've had similar procedures for my womb cancer treatment. The first part will be like a smear test, they will insert the speculum so that they can have a good look, usually with a headlamp at the business end too lol.

They might take a biopsy from your cervix to test in the lab, I've had a few biopsies and they were fine, it might be an idea to take some pads with you, I had some bleeding after my biopsies. I took some ibuprofen and paracetamol before my appointment and I think it helped make it more comfortable. It's also a good idea to do some deep breathing exercises in the chair, my nurse tells me to deep breathe at check ups as the outward breaths help to relax the muscles.

The NHS describes the procedure here https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/colposcopy/

lots of women pass through the site and get the all clear so try not to worry and take one step at a time.

lots of love and let us know how you get on

    xxx
