Hi all,

We've created a new thread for radiotherapy discussions, as the existing threads were getting a little long.

  • If you're looking for earlier discussions, you can find the Feb/Mar thread here and the Apr/May thread here.
  • You can find useful radiotherapy tips shared by members in an older thread here.

Please do let us know if you have any other threads you think would be useful to link here.

  • When I had radiotherapy I was given aqueous cream and told to apply it regularly, multiple times a day if possible and I did have minimal sores x

  • Had t/c from the radiotherapy unit today. My planning appointment is on 2nd September, treatment will start on the 16th two days after my short cruise. Am concerned about the possible effects on my skin, the doctor said it can be marked for woman with large breasts.

It is 3 weeks post lumpectomy today and am still very tender, bruised and lumpy. Am trying arnica cream . How long has it taken you to recover? It’s ok at night when there are no effects of gravity. I am wearing a soft bra 24 hrs a day.  What has helped you?

  • Hi , this sounds quite similar to my reaction. 10 days after I completed my 5 RT sessions I started to feel discomfort and noticed a very red patch on the underside (implant). I have been given dressings and a barrier cream but after 10 days no real improvement. I am going back on Friday to have it checked again. The dressings ease the discomfort of it rubbing against anything but I am still aware of it.

  • Hello,

I found using a compression bra 24/7 the best for aiding healing after my lumpectomy as there’s was little movement and boobs held very securely. It was very soft material and stretchy with good support, got it from Central Medical Supplies (01538 399541) it was about £28 I think. I followed the measuring instructions online and it fitted really well. My surgeon was amazed how quickly the swelling and bruising reduced with it.  I did take Arnica 30C homeopathic pills as well. I’d say by 6weeks post op breast felt much better so by the time your RT is due you’ll hopefully be feeling more comfortable.

  • Thank you ladies for the information regarding radiotherapy. I have a mapping and scanning appointment on the 27th August. Feeling a bit apprehensive about it, but I'm sure it will be ok

  • Hi, i had my planning scan yesterday. I was also apprehensive but it was so straight forward. I followed the instructions on positioning which were simple. I had to practice the breath hold technique but that was fine too.

Everyone was so lovely and understanding and I left feeling better about the radiotherapy in general even though I was told I need 10 sessions and not the 5 I was originally told.

You will be totally fine I promise.xx

  • Good luck for appointment in case i forget as that's the date of my first session so may be a little preoccupied. Its mainly for going over details with you. I had to sign more forms as different hospital and had not agreed to radiotherapy.  The nurse was lovely and reassuring.  She even deciphered the jargon in the copy letter i got from surgeon to GP.  Mine took long time as they do CT scan and its so precise to the nearest mm for the radiotherapy. They were reassuring as lying on scanner bed for over an hour with boobs hanging out! X

    Hi

I'm pleased your session went well, I'm hoping at my results on Monday that's all I will need. Can I ask if the radiographer etc where male or female x

  • They were all female...2 at the ct scanner and one behind the glass checking the position and breath hold etc. They chatted away except when the ct scan was actually taking place when they left the room but that was only for a few minutes at a time. Xx

    Hi

Thank you, I don't normally worry or think of things like that but recently it's on my mind permanently, I've flashed these boobs all over the place recently, but it's been within the breast care team, the radiotherapy is for everyone and dont think I could cope, just one of those days
