Never thought I would be here posting.....

I'm 38 years old, and a few weeks ago I found a small hard lump not to far from my nipple... I have four amazing kids, 22,21,17 and 11. And an amazing granddaughter who's 2 :)...

First reaction hey it's no big deal I have small breasts and I notice even the smallest of changes. Any how I went to the doctor just for peace of mind, expecting them to say it was nothing to worry about.. but they said it needed to be checked regardless.. I'm fine I'm not worried I don't think it's anything to worry about. I mean surely I would know if it was something serious? I would have a feeling right??

My breast clinic appointment is tomorrow.. now I'm nervous, I don't know what to expect or anything.. I'm also dealing with the fact my nan has been given just days left after a long battle of health problems (not cancer) so my heads a bit all over.

My other nan did die 5 years after she found a lump in her breast but I have no idea what type as she didn't really speak to anyone after my grandad died and she never wanted treatment so that she could be back with him.

Not sure what I'm looking for on here to be honest, it just feels better getting it all off my chest I think.

Anyway thank you for taking the time to read this xx

  • Hi Xtashax82,

Sorry you have needed to come to this site but hopefully your lump proves to be benign as most invariably are.  It's still a worry though so it's great you've found this site.

As to what to expect, probably a mammogram first and then maybe an ultrasound and biopsy of the lump if they can't rule cancer out from the mammogram.  Most biopsies also come back as nothing so nothing to worry about if they do suggest a biopsy.  The biopsy isn't painful as they give you a local anaesthetic.  The wait for results is usually the worst bit.

The main things to remember are that most lumps prove to be nothing but should it be cancerous then bear in mind that cancer is very treatable these days with a very high success rate.

I was diagnosed 18th December and had surgery to remove the lump 16th Jan.  I am now cancer free and waiting for my 5 day course of radiotherapy to begin.

Really hope you get good news and it proves to be nothing. x

  • Hello, Welcome to the site you never wanted to join., but hopefully we can put your mind at rest about the breast clinic. I presume they all run on similar lines. Once a brief history has been taken of your medical history and any medications that you are taking you will be taken to have a mammogram - possibly just one side but more likely both sides. These are then looked at by the Consultant and further tests requested if needed. These may include ultrasound examination, manual examination and possibly biopsies.(under  local anaesthetic so no pain but a bit of pressure maybe.) The staff will guide you through and explain each stage , do ask questions if you are unsure. After all the necessary tests are done you will have a consultation with the Breast Surgeon and a specialist nurse (BCN- Breast Care Nurse). They will explain the results of some of the tests and possibly tell you what they think your treatment should be, IF it is needed . I hope that you are able to take someone with you for this chat, I was diagnosed just as the first lockdown came in but my husband was allowed to be there when I was given the results. Take a notebook and pen with you  to jot down the main points to refer to later. My BCN went through things with me after the Consultant had left the room. She will answer your questions and further explain things. IF (and it is a big IF) it is thought that you have cancer this is very treatable these days. Please do not go on Dr google he is often out of date or just plain wrong . Wishing you all the best and please return to tell us how tyou got on. Sending big virtual hugs xxKwissy

Thank you both for your replies. This may sound silly but I have really small breasts I'm unsure they will be able to use a mammogram?

The only person I could bring with me is my daughter and because the family has a lot going on at the moment I don't want to burden anyone with this unless I really have to.

But I have asked my sister who doesn't live near me to be able to be on the other end of the phone if it is needed so she can maybe jot down anything I might need to know.

Like I said I'm positive it's nothing but if and like you both said that's a big if I will just be glad I have this group I can turn to for anything I might not understand. Xx

  • My mum has really small breasts too and she has had mammograms (no cancer just routine checks fortunately) so I'm sure it will be possible.  But in the unlikely event that they can't then they can use ultrasound and MRI.

I attended all my tests alone and didn't tell anyone until after my diagnosis as that's how I felt best able to cope.

On the day I was given the results of the tests I was allowed to take someone with me and so I took a friend.  It was a bit of a giveaway what the results were going to be when they asked (in the middle of covid) if I wanted to take someone with me.

We are all different and for me having someone with me for the tests (not that I was allowed anyone) just wasn't necessary.  But on the day you are going to get your results you might want to plan for someone to be with you even if it's over the phone.  Should you receive bad news it can help to have someone else paying attention and taking notes. xx

    So had my appointment today.

I wanted to cry. So they first had a check and feel. Said it feels like a cyst and was gonna send me on my way.. He then comes back in and said I'm gonna send you for a scan just in case..

So they scanned it and then said it isn't a cyst so we need to take a biopsy. Never felt pain like it!! Then they did a second biopsy. Then they put a clip in so it's like a marker for them in case they need To come back to it again.. Then I had a mammogram that was painful after having the biopsy.. They think it's just a fibroadenoma, but won't know for 100% until I get my results next week Tuesday. Its only 1cm X

  • Sounds as if you had a bit of a rough time - sorry to hear that. I suspect your boob will be sore for a while. Will keep my fingers crossed for a good result for you- in the meantime sending gentle hugs xx Kwissy

  • Such a shame the biopsy was painful for you as t shouldn't have been, did they not anaesthetise the area first?  Main thing is it's done and it's great to hear that they are being cautious and taking a biopsy.  The wait is really hard but 1cm is really small so even if it is cancerous it sounds like it was caught really early and so should be very treatable and hopefully just a lumpectomy and radiotherapy.

Like they said though it's more than likely going to be nothing to worry about.  xx
