New Diagnosis

I have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer - hormone fed.
They cannot operate at the moment as my tumour is too close to my breast muscle and would mean damaging the use of my arm.
today they have put me on Letrozole in the hope that my tumour will shrink and then they can operate safely.
Anyone else on this drug? How are you doing?

  • Hello Atlas

I was on it from November to last week and a break now while I have chemo/radiotherapy. I was better on accord brand than Sun pharmaceutical but everyone will tolerate differently. I got aching in the  hip & leg muscles when I stood up but walking, swimming & yoga all helped. I’ve to be on it for 10 years after.

  • Hello

Sorry you find yourself here and very sorry that you have the added complication of your tumour being in a place that makes it difficult to operate.

I was on Anastrozole - very similar to Letrozole - but Letrozole suppresses oestrogen more so I'm guessing that's why you are on Letrozole as it should have more of an effect on the tumour.

As Suwi04dc4e says different brands make a difference.  I had exactly the same with Anastrozole - Sun pharmaceutical was horrendous for me, I was ok on Teva and Accord as they had exactly the same coatings.  So if you find you are struggling with one brand, specifically ask for another brand.

Unfortunately when your oestrogen gets taken from you, the normal side effects of losing oestrogen that we get when we are old,  is increased on the drugs.

I was ok on mine as I stuck to the 2 brands and I hope you do find the same and that your tumour shrinks enough to have the surgery.

    Kindest wishes, Lesley

  • Yes I am on letrozole, I do get hot flushes and stiffness, ok if I keep moving

Can I just ask, are you not needing chemo? Not heard of letrozole being used to shrink a tumour.

I hope you are feeling ok about everything x

  • Hi, I've been on Letrazole since last summer.  I haven't found it too bad, my knees and also my hips to  a lesser extent are a bit stiff, but not sore. Also, I had quite a bit of hair thinning, but that seems tohave settled down-oh and intimate dryness which is the worst of the side effects. Im on the accord brand ( which i requested). I was 65 when it all started, post menopause by 14 years.

  • Thank you for your message.
No no Chemo for me - said it wouldn’t be helpful.

Still processing all this - it’s a lot to take in.
nice to hear how this medication is effecting other people.
    Best wishes x

  • Hi - thank you for your message.
I am 61 and all this came as a bit of a shock to me.
if I don’t get on with the Sun brand I may request Accord.
Nice to hear how the medication is effecting other people.
    Best wishes.
