Hi all , I'm new. I had a good chat with one of the nurses earlier. I just got results from my routine mammogram today which said it was clear . However , I have had worsening symptoms since I had it and am extremely worried that it may have missed something

My left breast is swollen and I have a retracting nipple as well as dimpling. There's thickened skin on my nipple too so am concerned it may be inflammatory breast cancer . I've had my breast examined by a junior doctor who said it was normal yet I know its not normal for me. My doctor puts everything down to chronic pain syndrome so am worried that she will do the same with this.

I'm worried sick as my mum got IBC in her late fifties too

Thank you for reading

  • Hi Foxy27 welcome to the forum and I am so sorry to hear how worried that you are. The Mammograms are usually very thorough but it is not unheard of for them to miss some types of issues.

I think you should see your GP and ask them to examine you and explain your worries there can be no harm in referring you to the breast clinic and lets the experts take a look. The symptoms you are describing  I would have thought do need further investigation and if I was you I would push the GP for that. Please do come back and let us know how you get on but don't be fobbed off.  Best wishes.x

Thank you so much for the reply . I have doctor on Thursday so hoping she will actually refer me. I'm taking my mammogram letter with me because it states that they can miss some cancers. My doctor and I don't have a great relationship sadly . She has fobbed me off too many times so this is something I will be pushing for. I have an advocate whom I will be speaking to tomorrow too so am hoping she may also be able to help if needed xx

  • If you think that she might fob you off you should say that you know someone whose mammogram missed DCIS and it wasn't until the next one where a tumour formed that they saw it,  and they then checked the previous one.  That's happened to a few of us here.  Ultrasound showed my nodes as clear as well, but one sentinel had a 6mm deposit.  20% of women with 'clear' nodes have something found after surgery.  Stress that for the sake of your mental health you need to be sure. Good luck!

  • Hi Sorry to hear you are worried about your symptoms. Hopefully this is going to be fine so try not to panic too much. I don't want to increase your anxiety but just wanted to agree with that you really should insist on being referred for further tests despite a clear mammogram. My mammogram was completely clear, even at the urgent referral day. They did an ultrasound anyway because I had found a lump. It was indeed cancer (invasive ductal). They said that with some people the tissue is too dense for mammogram to be accurate (I was 51 at the time). I am a small cup size and the lump was near the skin, so it wasn't a case of it being hidden away, but still it was not visible at all on mammogram. The radiographer was fairly shocked as he had cleared the mammogram as normal. You are not wasting their time and you need reassurance. I hope this all turns out to be something benign for you, and further tests reassure you. I know its easier said than done but try not to worry too much in the meantime as you are doing all you can. Sending virtual hugs x

Hi Foxy27 as others have said you definitely need a second opinion as Inflammatory Breast Cancer is not usually picked up on mammograms as it grows in a flat line not a "ball" type growth. It is rare so the person/people examing you may not have seen it before.

I have put in the main symptoms so you could print it out and highlight it for your doctor to see.If you get no result there ring your hospital Breast Cancer department and ask to speak to a breast care nurse and I'm sure they will fast track you back.

        Stay safe,
