I am new to this group   I had breast cancer 6 years ago and was given the all clear and discharged last December.  Then in August I found a lump in my other breast.  I have had a lumpectomy and am awaiting further treatment.  On Monday I saw the Oncologist and was given options for treatment and I have now to decide whether I want chemo or just to have Herceptin and radiotherapy and have found this very difficult as I don't necessarily understand all the factors involved.  My cancer had not spread to the lymph nodes and I think this is just for extra insurance against it coming back.  (The last time I had hormone sensitive type and this time it is HER2 positive.)

I am inclined to just have herceptin and not the chemo as I am in my 70s and don't want to put my body through that if it is not essential.  Am I being stupid?

  • Hi ,

so sorry you have recurrence but this time it’s HER2+. I guess that’s not common?
I’m intrigued that you have been offered Herceptin but not chemo? I understood from my surgeon that this wasn’t an option? But then my diagnosis was over 2 years ago and things change rapidly (mine turned out to be negative anyway)

Keep posting, oh, and explore other threads too...in diagnosis and treatment options and other headings too.

    Hugs xxx

I have been offered both chemo and herceptin together but told I can have herceptin on its own.  I am borderline for chemo and would be given a reduced dose of just one drug rather han a cocktail of chemo drugs.
