What a way to be given a diagnosis!

I had my first appointment with biopsies on 22 September and was due to get my results on 14 October.  Today I received an appointment letter to see an ONCOLOGIST.  It really shook me up.  I had a strong feeling that I probably did have cancer but receiving a letter was not the way to get the news!

The hospital trust have been good and I had a telephone consult with a doctor this afternoon so, at least, I have been able to get answers to the questions I would have asked on 14th.

  •  that is just awful. What a heartless cruel way for them to let you know! Even if you suspected it must have been a dreadful shock. I,m glad you had the telephone consult. What do they plan for you!? Big hugs xxx

Onwards and flatwards (don't do hills) and keep walking if you can!

  • I need to have a CT scan to see if the lobular cancer has spread (at least 1 lymph node is affected).  They have moved the oncologist appointment to Monday where I will find out when my chemo will start.  Doing chemo before mastectomy.  Thanks for the hugs.

  • Oh , what a shocking way to find out! I know Covid has pulled the rug from under so many feet but that was just cruel. I hope things improve from now on for you

    Sending hugs xxx

  • Hello , Oh dear that is a dreadful failure in communication skills!. I am glad that you were able to ask questions later but that still doesn't excuse the  letter. I hope that the rest of your treatment goes much more smoothly.Sending big hugs xx

    Hi Lesley63

There's never an easy way to hear it but you shouldn't have had to find out like that. My heart goes out to you. It's good you've been able to ask what you wanted to.

Wishing you all the best for your treatment

    X

  • HI from another Lesley ...

Although you have now had confirmation from speaking to the oncologist that you have breast cancer, it's my understanding that the appointment is generally made with an oncologist even if it's not breast cancer as it's the oncologist that give you your results of the biopsies.  So,this isn't unusual.  I had the same, even though I suspected  from what the nurse had told me when I was having the biopsies, it was an appointment with the oncologist when I got my results - and mine was 3 years ago, so I think this might be standard practice..  I honestly don't think your Hospital Trust has done anything incorrect - even though for us when we see the word oncologist we automatically assume that it's going to be cancer, sometimes some ladies do get good news (lucky things eh?).

Do come on here to ask any questions and get support whilst you go through this as only those of us who've 'been there and got the T-shirt' truly understand the emotional impact as well as everything else.

    Kindest wishes,

    Lesley

  • good luck with your appt, and let us know when you start chemo and what you have xxx

  • Hi. My appointment to get my results was with the consultant to whom I was referred.  But a week before this appointment I get the one to see an oncologist so your scenario does not apply.  My telephone consult where I eventually got my results.was not with an oncologist.

  • Oh gosh, then that is an awful way to find out - sorry for my misunderstanding. Yes, I am thinking back now and realising my results appointment were with the breast care surgeon, rather than oncologist.  But, crikey what a mix up by them to let the oncologist appointment go out before speaking to you to let you know face to face and offer you the support you needed Disappointed

Very best wishes with your appointment x
