I had this brutal operation  5th August 2013 .

I would welcome information from others please  , my plastic surgeon was a patronising **** and I had to apply for my medical noted in order to get some info  he held it up for 3 months !! and am now in the middle of a complaint . Still waiting for info .

I've been back and forward to GP with various issues related to pain , hospital for seroma above the new belly button, such pain , stomach cramping , spasms etc , etc , etc.I was told that I was not eating enough fibre or exercising  enough.

Has anyone else been treated this way?

I am now going to a private therapist who practises the Bowen technique  as the back pain was intolerable . I was laterally advised  by the private therapist that I have a tilted pelvis which has been exacerbated or caused by the dissecting   of my core muscles etc

This has been a totally hellish experience and if I had known then what I know now I would have walked away,  the type of cancer I finally found out that I had  was very slow slow growing and very rare and very rarely does it go else where. I could have had a normal body and life for another 20 years !!!

I feel that I was on the NHS conveyor  belt  on the  one treatment fit for all , no consideration for the impact on a person's life .Because I was stupid and naive and trusted the surgeon

I'm sorry if this is upsetting for folks but I am very bitter and deeply regret having the surgery  and I do not trust medical staff now. I continue to have pain , the seroma has not reduced and continues to bloat further every evening.

  • I am sorry that you are so upset at your treatment. I am sure that most medics have your best interests at heart and you have been very unfortunate to come across an arrogant surgeon.

    Best wishes

    Hi Kate G ,

I'm now nearly 2 years post surgery and still have issues regarding this barbaric surgery. I have followed the NHS complaints procedure and made official complaints and it was investigated by the then nurse practitioner who had also been involved in my "care" . I naively thought that investigations were carried out independently of the service and people involved to ensure the investigation and report would not be biased .  I did receive a response  but of course the Consultant said he is sorry that he did not provide enough information to meet my needs.

He was a patronising arrogant git and I stupidly trusted him and that Breast Sister , who also alleged that she would honest and tell me everything.

Of course they failed to inform me about the side effects , I complained about back pain when I woke after the surgery and I continue to experience this , if I do too much I have muscular spasms in my abdomen which then pass to my back . When they are bad it can quite literally take away my breath.

I did a stress management course at Maggie's Centre but found sitting quite uncomfortable, so no help there!! I try to relax and have to stretch on the floor daily for 30 mins as my body always wants to curl up. I walk and again have to stop and stretch. I did have 2 sessions of physio  from the hospital sadly at the hospital where the operation took place. I also eat a very high fibre diet as now suffer from constipation and bloat.

This experience has made me question why such barbaric surgery is practised , I am now unable to trust the people who did this to me . They knew what was involved , what they were doing and of course the side effects  and patronised me when  I complained . They chose their  mode of behaviour and unfortunately when I kept asking I was deliberately miss-led , lied too and patronised.

I just hope that no other woman suffered the same experience , I hope the medical staff have learned to treat people with compassion , communicate effectively so that women  can make an informed choice about the rest of their life .

I deeply regret that I agreed to the surgery, participated in breast screening  and the horrendous experience at the West of Scotland Breast Screening Clinic .( the Ombudsman upheld my complaint ref- 20141181)

I had prior to the experience enjoyed a moderately active life , friends and was entering the dating scene again . Now my life has been drastically affected and for me this surgery was not worth it

I am sorry you have suffered so much and continue to do so. Could you say what type of cancer you had and what the op was that left you like this?

I have also had occasion to complain after a palliative care doctor coldly pressurised my husband , dying of pulmonary fibrosis caused by docetaxl for prostate cancer, to decide to die. She is said to be being retrained but I dread falling into her 'care'.
