So! As is well discussed on here, food on docetaxel is disgusting. There are things that I don’t think I’ll ever eat again so gross have they become, sausages being the latest!! My question is this, is there anything that isn’t totally disgusting in peoples genuine experience not necessarily what they’ve read? So far I’ve found sorbet lollies aren’t too bad but I can’t survive on those, anything else?
Hi Anna12345, I developed a voracious sweet tooth on both EC and Docetaxol, which only increased on D. Anything savoury was yuk from about Day 5 to Day 10 post cycle.
During those days lived on ginger biscuits - the crunchier and sweeter the better - ice cream (any flavour) granola with banana and Alpro vanilla yoghurt and French toast with icing sugar and fruit. Also ate tons of cherries, peaches and nectarines to atone for the biscuits and ice cream. Plus I read somewhere that cherries and peaches were good for fluid retention. Don’t know if they made any difference but I liked eating them!
Once taste started to return I also enjoyed spicy food, particularly Thai flavours. Green curry was good plus any recipe with ginger and lime in it.
11 weeks post chemo now and everything almost back to normal - still haven’t quite kicked the ginger biscuit habit!
Enjoy experimenting xx
I’m starting to see that again with this we’re all going to be different! I’m struggling with sweet, fruit seems to be ok though but honestly nothing much is tasting nice for now, I went and got some tomato soup earlier, I shall try that later x thanks for all your ideas x
Hi Anna so sorry you are struggling with food...I had the same (two years ago now but still remember)...Even water tasted vile.....I did find that if food is really cold it was bearable couldn't tolerate any hot food. My husband suffered as when he was making anything for himself I had to go in another room....all I managed from day 3-12 was egg mayonnaise sandwiches really cold and I could eat cold yoghurt...my husband got me some frozen yogurt from the supermarket which was soothing.... keep going girl it will end..my thoughts with you..xx
Thank you, yes frozen yogurt and sorbets work for me, I’m starting to find that things with limited textures and sharp tastes are working best I think and more savoury flavours than sweet. Egg Mayo might work too, I’ll try it tomorrow x
Your taste will come back thank goodness, even for those things you think you'll never stomach again! But it took mine probably 5 or 6 weeks after my last docetaxel.
I found fruity, sweet things doable, and I do not have a sweet tooth at all. To drink water, I had to put ribena in it, something I would never normally drink.
This isn't much help, but I just tried to eat the healthy meals every day as best I could but then have a sweetie afterwards to get the horrible taste in my mouth away. I found jellied fruity sweets good like fruit pastilles. I have to admit, I tried not to eat too many but it was a relief when I did. I also got into making fruit smoothies to drink which was really easy as I bought frozen fruit from the supermarket - tasted amazing!
I saw someone mentioned blue cheese, just be a bit cautious on that during chemo. I was told by my oncologist to avoid all those kinds of foods - so soft cheeses, blue cheeses, medium/rare cooked meat, unwashed salad, soft eggs etc. I guess like someone who is pregnant! But when on chemo, your immune system may not be able to cope with it and you could end up ill. I even asked my oncologist how long after my last chemo I could eat al that stuff again as I was fed up with well done steak and desperate to eat brie again!!
Hi Ive just finished my last treatment of D. Watermelon is really nice and fruity ice lollies. I could also eat chicken/vegetable soup, cheese on toast, chicken, rice with mild curry and most vegetables. Nothing too spicy or sweet.
Something else I remembered today! I found that tomato ketchup helped a lot…on scrambled egg on toast, on cheese on toast and with mashed potato.
Had scrambled egg for breakfast this morning and didn’t reach for the ketchup….so definitely well over it now
Just remembered I lived on soups (still do, a great way to easily get nutrients in!) and eggs every day. I found I could eat those fine..
