Reconstruction surgery

Hi

I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in November and have had two rounds of breast conserving surgery. However when I received my results from the re-excision today I was told that I would need a mastectomy due to there being some lobular cancerisation.

My surgeon said that I was unable to have an immediate reconstruction as this is currently not permitted due to covid. However, looking online I can see that some hospitals are now doing reconstructive surgery again.

If you’ve had reconstructive surgery since Covid, I’d be grateful if you can let me know what areas you are in (particularly if you’re in the Midlands) so that I can query this advice with the surgeon.

Many thanks all Slight smile

What hospital do you go to

I go to a private hospital in Northampton.

  • It seems to be that the hospitals that have started up doing the surgery are mainly down south - London and Bristol way. It’s very frustrating! I’m a year on from SMX and was supposed to be seen in May to be put on the list for surgery in October - this didn’t happen due to Covid and I’ve been told the list has been closed and they don’t have plans to reopen it for ‘at least a couple of months’

I’ve been told this morning that reconstruction surgery where I live won’t start until September at the earliest. Very disappointing.

  • It is disappointing. I just fear that there is a group of ladies that are going to be forgotten about and will struggle to get reconstruction. I had no choice in the decision (and this was before Covid ) , I was just told that I couldn’t have immediate reconstruction. I’m not even on the waiting list yet as my appointment for this was cancelled , trying to speak to a BCN just isn’t happening. I now feel that I am a second class citizen and I’m being punished for getting the wrong sort of cancer. It’s not helping my mental health as well as the physical problems I’m having. Feel so let down by the system at the moment.
