Hi all,
I’m new here but you seem a nice bunch so here goes...
I had a routine screening mammogram just over a week ago and I’ve been recalled. I phoned to ask for more info as the letter was generic. They’ve seen something that they want to check. I lost both my mum and gran to breast cancer - they were both 57 at diagnosis and died at 60. I’m ‘almost’ 50. I’ve had annual mammograms since I lost my mum 15 years ago.
Has anyone else had this same experience and how did it pan out?
Sorry, I’m just worried I’m heading the same way as mum and gran!
Thanks x
Hi and welcome to the online community
I'm very sorry to hear that you've lost both your mum and gran to breast cancer so you're bound to be worried about this recall. This happened to me last year and it turned out to be a harmless cyst, which they drained.
I hope yours will turn out to be something similar.
x
Thank you so much latchbrook, I’m keeping everything crossed it turns out similar xx
Sorry you've got this worry. There are two issues here aren't there? Firstly, until you go back and have further investigation, probably an ultrasound but possibly a biopsy too, you won't know if you have cancer or a benign problem. This happened to me. My mammogram detected three small lumps. I had had no idea prior to the mammogram. Luckily my centre did the extra tests on the spot but I had to wait a week for the biopsy result. Although it was cancer because they were small, they were removed with a lumpectomy. I did need some other treatment but this was nearly five years ago and at the present time, I have no cancer. So, if your mammogram has shown an early cancer.....and as you've had regular checks it's the most likely.......treatment is very successful. Even in the five years since my diagnosis there have been many improvements. Which links to your second fear......because of your tragic family history....that any diagnosis will be terminal. It is again likely that the screening you have received will enable you to receive the treatment you require quickly and that you will have a sucessful recovery.
I know I won't stop you worrying. I doubt there is anyone on this site who hasn't struggled through the waiting but just try to remember....many hundreds of lumps or blemishes on x rays are not cancer and where it is cancer......modern treatments and early detection lead to many successful recoveries.
We will be thinking of you. Let us know how you get on with the call back.
Love Karen
Hello ... As others have said they have spotted something on your mammo that they need to check on.This does not mean that it is a cancer but the fact that you have been having annual mammos means that if it is a cancer it will have been caught very early. They will probably repeat the mammo and possibly do an ultrasound scan and if necessary biopsy.Or, of course you will be reassured that the first mammo was unclear for some reason and the 2nd one is clear .Either way you will probably be told on the day which one it is. In the meantime try to be kind to yourself and try not to worry until you know what is happening. The waiting is the worst bit honestly .Sending you big hugs xx
Thank you for your reply and reassuring words Lacomtekp. My appointment was this afternoon and I posted literally an hour before I set off when reality started setting in. I’d managed to keep busy and bury it until then! On mammogram it looked like a small cauliflower, on ultrasound an irregular black hole with a scattering of smaller black holes behind it. Dr didn’t give much away, I suppose they can’t really. Had a biopsy and a marker placed. 2 week wait now! Xx
Thank you for your reassuring words Kwissy. I posted about an hour before setting off for my appointment when nerves got the better of me. I’ve had a US, biopsy, marker placed and mammogram to check the marker placement. The Dr didn’t speculate - as I’m sure the only way to be certain is biopsy. I’m grateful whatever it is that it’s reassuringly early, and they’ve been extremely thorough. Just got to get through the next 2 weeks without too many wobbles, and keep a brace face in front of family! Xx
Don't wobble on your own. There is always someone in this group for you to chat with. You can rant, laugh, cry.....there is always someone who will listen.
The Awake thread will probably make you laugh and take your mind away from your worries although they do have serious moments too and with a lot of experience between the posters they will answer your queries and empathise.
....Glad to hear that the test centre was very thorough and hopefully they explained things as they went along. As Lacomtekp has said please don't wobble on your own, we have all been where you are now and the waiting is the worst part. I tried to keep busy doing things I enjoy albeit curtailed by the Covid restictions. I found it helped me greatly to come onto this site and explore the various threads and to realise there were others who really understood how I felt. The Awake thread is still my favouite I think but look at some of the others too- I hope you become one of the "Fruit Loops ". Take care of youself -sending more hugs xx
Thank you so much Kwissy, I have indeed already had a look around the various threads and there is so much positivity on here, what an amazing group you are. Worry is such a lonely place and this support network is a great antidote. I’m so grateful for your support today ladies. Thank you. Xx
