Hi, I've finished... I've had my last injection of chemo last Thursday. I'm still feeling a bit pants but super happy, no more chemo Grin

My hair fell out but has been growing through the last few weeks of my treatment and it's now about 1cm long, thin, patchy, soft and fuzzy... I look like I've had my finger in a plug socket.

I read online that this fuzz isn't my hair and this will fall out when my real hair starts growing in a month or so.

I was talking to another lady who said she shaved the fuzz stage off and it encouraged her real hair to grow.

I quite like my fuzz, I look like a minion but it's nice to have something on my head but if it encourages real hair growth I'm thinking of shaving it off and going boiled egg again for a while.

Has anyone else been told about how to encourage hair and does removing the fuzz help or make no difference?

I forgot to ask if anyone can recommend a shampoo for new hair

  • I can't help with the type of hair (which sounds cute btw!), but the general rule is that it takes about 6 months for the roots to recover,  which is why dyeing is best left until then.  I cold capped and ended up with about 15% original hair and the rest started growing with the Paclitaxel I have various shades of brown with white, and some grew back curly and straightened,  and some is still curly and some straight.  It was like dog hair in texture for about 5 months and then suddenly softened! I suppose it's down to your whole body being affected and recovering. When I cold capped my hair was a bit straw like in the end under the scarf.

Cancerhaircare.co.uk have lots of info (and great free haircuts if you're in the area)

The  fluffy hair sounds adorable btw!

  • Hi ,

    You sound like me !!

I finished chemo at end of December and by February I had a covering of fuzz !. I was so glad to have something growing from my head !!   I hated “the boiled egg” look !
So the ONLY thing that was good about lockdown for me was that I happily lived with my fuzz. In Scotland we have a cartoon character with sticky up hair called Oor Willie and that’s what the family called me ! I didn’t have the heart to shave it off although a hairdresser had told me that if this happened I should. As the hair grew in it was a much better quality of hair Although it was a completely different texture and it came in grey so I became Mrs Brillo Pad ! So now I have a full head of quite thick very short hair with a little halo of fuzz which I have to gel to stay flat. Otherwise it just sticks up. So I suppose I should have shaved the fuzz off but now glad I didn’t - it gave me the extra length. . I have become quite fond of my fuzz  ! Hairdressers here only opened last week so have not been to the hairdresser yet but now it is ready to be styled and most likely goodbye to my little halo !

  • Hi

Congratulations on finishing the chemo - have a 'phew' on me.

I lost c40% of hair after 2nd chemo and along with the total faff of it all shaved to a grade 1.  Didn't do anything special once finished chemo, just left it to grow, it was baby soft to start with and now is like a border terriers in texture & waviness. Probably matches my temperament well!!

I had last EC chemo end Dec and had about 5cm growth end April and maybe 10cms by end June.  Growth spurt was predominantly from mid March onwards, my hair does grow quickly and is naturally very thick.

I just thank the lord that I didn't have to have hair like my 95 yr old grandmother (wavy and my natural salt & pepper grey) for too long and that hairdressers are now open.  Although using the same hairdresser I have for 10 yrs I did have a patch test for dye as chemo does so many odd things to skin which has only gone back to normal recently and didn't want my head to explode or anything (I'd insert a smiley face if I wasn't such a luddite).

So for me I'm in the 'makes no difference' camp.  Did think about charging friend & family to touch my baby soft head...make the most of it while it lasts.

  • I used grow gorgeous (online or boots). I’d leave the fluff and treat it kindly!
