Hello,

I am due to have a left sided mastectomy on 27th May (previously had 2 lumpectomies before Christmas) and am worries about feeling flat afterwards. I am a 30GG and feel quite big in most of my clothes. I am also keen not to end up having a 4th operation later down the line. Do I need to be worried about looking flat afterwards? I can’t seem to find much advice on what is out there to wear in terms of bras.
Thanks

Hi I too have had 2 operations last year prior to a mastectomy 2 weeks ago. I have quite a small bust and didn’t think it would affect me. However it did when the dressing was removed. Which is to be expected. You will be given a softy to put in your bra (sports bra is best initially) and I feel ok as you can’t tell. You can order bras from woman zone and they are amazing however, not cheap. The front fastening sports bras are £22 I was given one at the hospital and ordered another one. I also ordered the Maisy bra which is £32 but worth it. They have a lot to choose from. I have decided to have reconstruction but I have to wait 18 months to 2 years as had partial reconstruction after lumpectomy which has now been removed due to mastectomy.

I hope all goes well and if you want to ask anything else so message me. Just give yourself time.

  • Hi there,

Admittedly we're all different but I don't mind at all being lop sided!

I do wear softies but find them to be far too pert (despite removing quite a lot of the stuffing) so may actually look more lop sided with rather than without...due to be fitted for ( much more realistic looking) prosthesis 4 weeks after end of radiotherapy. My hospital provided softie and I also got a lovely knitted knocker from the charity of the same name. I find the post surgery bra's (available on line) from M&S to be really good and, really important, comfy.

Am an E cup and will be having DIEP reconstruction when I can mainly so clothes hang right and also will be taking advantage of having LHS reduced (its also lumpy as had a lumpectomy that side) and losing some of my stomach too!  But like you not looking forward to the prospect of another operation - more due to the time taken to recover.

    Good luck re op.

  • Hi,

I had a Mastectomy and was given a softie but, as I'm a 32B it looked silly as it was bigger than my remaining breast so I chose not to wear it. I wear M&S Mastectomy Bras which are really comfy and because I'm small I can get away without anything in my mastectomy side and look fine.  Quite honestly to me being flat is not a huge problem, rather that than have the cancer in it.  I knew from the start I didn't want a reconstruction.

  • I too don’t mind being flat on one side. It’s amazing how you change. I was originally going to have Diep flap reconstruction until coronavirus raised its ugly head. So 2 days before I was due to have that surgery I had a mastectomy and now I’ve more or less decided not to go for reconstruction when the time comes. Because I’m big boobed I may ask to have the other side reduced but we will see. x
