Hi All,

I went for another check yesterday on my post op wound on my breast. The doctor said there was necrosis on the skin around the wound as the skin was very fine. That I needed to see the surgeon but he's on holiday for 2 weeks. I feel scared to have to wait that long to wait to see him. Suerly that's putting it at risk. They put a dressing on yesterday and told me to not touch it for 5 days till my local dressing nurse can change it but to keep an eye on it, but that I should keep it covered. They have put lots of dressings and bandaging on it. How can I keep an eye on it?

Have been told to watch carefully for an infection ie temperature rise. I've had sepsis before and it was absolute hell. Needless to say I can't even buy a thermometer as everywhere is sold out at the moment. I'm not happy. Sorry for the negative winge. I timed this badly with all the current NHS problems. Disappointed

  • Try not to worry about it. Some types of dressings can be left in place for a few days. Specialised dressings are made in such a way, that they can debride ie get rid of any bad or infected tissue, and need to be kept on to work. If there is leakage or abnormal amount of wound drainage through the dressing so it becomes soaked etc, see medical profession sooner. So if anyone is on holiday it doesnt matter you go and get it changed x they can't leave it if it's in a mess x

I'm a nurse I work in cardio thoracic and deal with many a wound. From my own personal perspective..I had complications following masectomy and reconstruction, 4 surgeries later, my wound under the breast was infected and my nipple died a sorry death, so i had surgery no 5. I had dressings and vacuum assisted dressings and then some, it took a while to heal but all was good x follow the advice they give you but if concerned go get medical help x and don't take no for an answer, they have a duty of care to look after you. And in my experience I've had to teach doctors and consultants about dressings and wound care xx they are brill at surgery but not dressings sometimes.

    Heal well my lovely xxx

Thanks for that Snowfairy, that helps to hear. I just had a call  back from my local clinic that the swab they took for the infection has come back as positive so they have put me on antibiotics. That reassures me a little as any infection was a worry alongside the necrosis. At least thats being dealt with.
