Hi - I am new to this group. I had a lumpectomy ten days ago and am just waiting to hear when I will start radiotherapy. The nurse recommended I get a post surgery bra so I went to buy last week. It was hard enough to find a shop that sold them. Seemed sensible to get measured and try on to find one that felt comfortable but in a few shops the assistants gave me blank looks and told me to go online which was depressing. A friend said I wouldn't be charged for the VAT but the guy in the very well known department store that did have one thought I was making it up when I asked him atbout the VAT thing at the till. It made a difficult experience even worse. Has anyone else had this problem? Any advice on where I should and where shouldn't I shop?

Thank you

    Hi luckyme13

I got mine from a M&S which might be the store you talking about. I did get the VAT off them but the first person who served me said I had to claim it back afterwards. But you don't they do it at the till.

To be honest though I found the sumptuously soft t-shirt bras no underwire bra much more comfortable. You dont get the VAT back on these.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi

M&S do post mastectomy bras, I have them and they are soft and comfortable. In M&S the assistants have always mentioned not paying the VAT.  Well worth a luck.

  • I bought online at Asda George. Very reasonably priced and comfortable. I've got the 2 pack (black/white) which are like sports bras which I wore immediately after the op. Now I also have the 2 pack (black/white) which are a bit more subtle and prettier for everyday. I think they were each £15 for the 2 pack. Very easy to click & collect in store and VAT is not charged.

I was also given some leaflets from the hospital and have looked at the Nicola Jane website, who have a good selection of pretty bras for something a bit more special. Bit more expensive but not ridiculous.

  • Hi,

Asda also have a nice range of soft, non-wired bras that are quite reasonable too, as well as post surgery bras. There is usually stock in the bigger shops, but you will find a bigger range online. Peacocks also have soft t-shirt bras - I thought these fit very well.

    Hi,

I had surgery, wide local excision & axillary clearance Dec 2019.

My post surgery bras I purchased at Asda, had to buy on line, so ordered L & XL ( usually wear 38DD) Found L was fine. They are front fastening soft & very comfortable.

Have worn them since the day

after my surgery & they are great & very reasonably priced compared to others on the market. I would highly recommend.

    Best wishes to all x

  • Hi

You mentioned Peacocks, well as it 2 years since my mastectomy and reconstruction   , I can now wear all my beautiful , unfortunately underwired , bras , my late mum used to treat me too, lovely matching sets of underwear . But in the evening it’s nice to go bra less . I bought a couple of vests with cups fitted , soooo comfy BUT one evening I said to hubby “ something not right here” promptly raised my top to discover one breast sitting naked and the other with minimal coverage !!! I don’t have any feeling in reconstructed side !  So beware ! But very comfy when covered .
I agree Supermarket bras are good value but I did buy one well fitted one - well that was the last one my mum bought me Pensive
After 6 months I bought bras from M&S plus a couple of luxury bras - all none wired .
I went back to aqua aerobics when chemo etc was over , I found wearing a good fitted bra ( black) under my swimsuit was great for support as without it I was a bit tender - jumping about !!!
Asda post surgery swimsuits are excellent - I bought on line and found them inexpensive- I don’t need the pockets in them but they are very well made  , so I buy them.

good luck on your journey to recovery .
