Hi

I finished chemo nearly two weeks ago had to have a blood transfusion today due to blood count being low  I was wonder if it is ok to start taking vitamins to try and boost my immune system.

Any information or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I was told to ask my oncologist about anything I was thinking about taking . The Chemo has affected your bone marrow / spleen and you are not making red blood cells ( aplastic anaemia ) , it will recover ! Try to eat a good diet , this will help ,  you need “ time “

good luck with your blood transfusion, perhaps there will be someone there you can ask ? Best wishes.   X

As says - always ask your oncologist about things you want to take, even supplements that seem common and harmless. My oncologist is okay with a 'normal' strength vitamin and mineral supplement, but doesn't want me to take anything else e.g. tumeric etc. However, I'm still on chemo, so it may be different to when you've finished.

However, oncologists appear to vary a lot  in what they allow people to take, so yours may be happy with high dose stuff!

    Hope you feel better soon.
