Hi everyone this is my first post. I was diagnosed after a call back from a routine mammogram, quite a shock as lump couldn't be felt even by doc. Got surgery results yesterday, consultant said " it's as good as it can get"   nothing in lymph nodes , clear margins, grade 2 and tumour was  9mm in size.im so thankful for that and for the care I've had  I'll be having radiotherapy after Christmas and have started letrozol yesterday for 5 years. I know it's looking a way ahead and I'm over thinking,  just wondering is there a high risk of it returning when you stop taking  the letrozole? There won't be anything suppressing the oestrogen then.?  Sorry if this sounds as if I'm looking so far ahead but these past few weeks my mind's been in overdrive thinking all sorts

Thanks for listening everyone

  • Hi

It's an interesting point as I've always thought that too!  I'm halfway through taking my tablets (Anastrozole for me).  I was Gd 2, 15mm, no lymph nodes (+ 54mm of DCIS),  So, you and I are early stages.

From what I've read, that they reduce our oestrogen during the years we take them and then don't have much effect thereafter.  Although, some ladies can be on them longer, so who knows!

It has always struck me as odd that we get annual checks for the 5 years whilst taking the tablets and then when we stop taking them, go to every 3 years as normal mammogram checks.  There must be science behind this and the fact that after 5 years of taking them they must have done their job and we are then at the same risk of it coming back as everyone else.

You can use this tool to see the NHS results of our life expectancy based on treatment.

Try not to worry about all this now, just concentrate on the next stage of your plan (ie. radio) and have a lovely Christmas in the meantime.

    Kindest wishes,

    Hi

J (my better half) completed 5 years of Letrozole and was offered it for another 5 years, so you may get the same offer.  Having said that in 5 years time there may be a new type of oestrogen suppressor available with less side effects. Also had 6 x chemo and Herceptin as back up, so not exactly the same scenario.

  • Hi and ,

I am feeling very similar concerns, as I escaped both the chemo and the radiotherapy bullets, ‘just’ having Letrozole for 5 years.

I’m post menopausal for rather more years than I care to think about (I’m 74) and already had mild osteoporosis and was on Alendronate.

I guess you’re both aware that AI’s have quite a detrimental long term effect on bones? My latest Dexa report said I needed to be on Alendronate as long as I’m taking Letrozole, that figures I guess.

If it proves that it’s useful to continue Letrozole longer than the 5 years I guess I will be on Alendronate too! It’s all in the hands of the gods, or rather our MDT teams, we have to rely on them for the best information. They are the ones with latest guidelines, they are the experts. (You know the comical definition of an expert? An ex is a has been, a spurt is water under pressure! Just threw that in to make you smile!)
