I'm due to get this op on 16 December. Can anyone tell me what the average recovery period is? I forgot to ask nurse at the clinic. I'm worried that I can't be with my elderly father on Christmas day if I'm not able to drive.

Hi ya, everyone is very different but i had a lumpectomy/ therapeutic mastectomy and snlb earlier this year, had the op on Wednesday, spent a night in hospital but was driving by the weekend and back at work on the Tuesday.

But as I said, everyone is different.

Btw Im 55 and have no health issues at all.

  • I had wire guided lumpectomy at 3pm, home by 8pm sane day no pain .  Driving a week later after happy seatbelt wouldn’t hurt boob!

I had lumpectomy on Monday...theatre 2.30pm, home for 8. No pain 1st 24 hours and free movement of arm due to pectoral block (boob epidural lol). Had a couple of doses of Co-codamol since...more of a stiffness than pain...and picked up my new car yesterday.

    Meep, Meep Blue car

Great news   Typical pick up a new car and can't drive it for a couple of weeks Face palm

Get yourself one of those small chest pillows, especially if it was right side surgery (seat belt side)

Fingers crossed for a hassle free recovery ThumbsupG n' J

Thanks ..I drove yesterday no problem and going out again this afternoon. I had a thick jacket on that provided some padding I suppose but didnt feel any discomfort.

Hiya Jamborae,  I had my Lumpectomy and lymph node removal and was only kept in overnight coz I have really low blood pressure. Home the next day and driving within a few days. I was given by the hospital a love heart shaped cushion and a front fastening support bra (a bit like a sports bra)

The cushion you just tuck under your arm and it makes a big difference when driving or sleeping.

Just remember to rest and do your arm exercises they give you and fingers crossed you will be able to spend Xmas day with your Dad.

Sorry for not replying but things got a bit hectic last weekend.  My dad's house got flooded when he was out and he's now in temporary accommodation. I had a bit of a meltdown because I felt I couldn't help him. Thankfully good family and friends are supporting us both so I'm ready to tackle anything now x

  • Re driving after surgery I was told 24 years ago when I had c-section I couldn’t drive for 6 weeks when discharged but GP said it’s 4 weeks after surgery if you have medical approval.  He said insurance companies have clause in policy about post surgery.

I can’t say I’ve seen it in my insurance but don’t really read small print .  Anyone know if you can’t drive for fixed periods after surgery?

I've heard various answers to this...when your gp passes you fit to drive (who goes to their gp to ask this??), when you're not taking opiates (loads of people drive while taking Co-codamol), when you can safely do an emergency stop and 24 hours after a general anaesthetic...so I'm shrugging my shoulders on this one (it's one of my exercises lol).
