hiya don’t know how to start this seems a silly question but I’ve had a mastectomy and reconstruction on Friday thought that would be the end of it all ( after already having two lumpectomies and then the mastectomy) but found out today I have to start chemotherapy when I’ve healed Cry The thing that worries most is losing my hair ( silly I know) but...

question is where have you found the scarfs/headware I’m not going for a wig I just want something “pretty” “stylish” not naff

okay I’m 60 yrs of age ( young 60 Wink) but still want to look feminine

but don’t know where to start looking anyone got any websites they have looked at please

    Hi Julie

I went through the hair loss issue and wore a beanie because i didnt know where to start with headscarves.  Then i went to a macmillan support group and met a volunteer who was a hairdresser.  She not only brought headscarves in to show me what to do, how to wear it, she also gave me the name of the company she swears by.  Its called the india shop and can be found at www.theindiashop.co.uk

I cant recommend it enough. The scarves are perfect, light but they stay on and they come in patterned or plain and also have free headbands when you buy 3 scarves.  I promise they are excellent.  Even fellow patients have asked me where I got mine.  I love my pale blue one, thats the one I wore most.  Give them a look.

Www.theindiashop.co.uk - great customer service too

  • Hi

upure not being silly , I certainly felt worse at the thought of losing hair than I had at getting rid of cancerous breast . I think others felt the same . Maybe it’s an outward sign that we can’t hide as much .. don’t know .

What I do know is it wasn’t as bad as I thought . I decided to go to pixie cut when I wanted not when chemo decided . I didn’t use cold cap but you may want to this can help keep hair .  I got a wig for occasions when I felt it would be needed .Have worn it for funeral . also to keep head warm once or twice when it was freezing. Again your choice . Go on google and search chemo hat lots of sites I use Amazon a lot reasonable prices and good selection . I have settled on plain beanies usually in bamboo material . Then I add a head band to match what I’m wearing .

Hope this helps going back to trying to sleep now had chemo today so fighting steroids lol

Talk tomorrow if you have more questions

  • I cold capped, so still have some hair, with about 1" all over filling in and I had my 5th Paclitaxel today after 4 x EC. I wear bamboo scarves bought on eBay which are soft and stretchy, and a bamboo beanie at night. I also have a few wigs, but only wear them when I'm going out where I don't want people to see me as a cancer sufferer. I even went to work last Friday when it was closed to students wearing my scarf.

  • Hi , sounds like you are having a rough time. Sorry to hear you have already been through 3 surgeries. To then find you needed Chemo must of been awful. By the way  TOTALLY normal to be worried about hair loss, I think it’s wha5 most people fear when Chemo is mentioned!

My Chemo was 6years ago now!! Where did that time go? But at the time I used an online company called Annabanbana, they had lots of different scarves and hats. I ended up with some elasticated pull on scarves, because I couldn’t work out how to do all the fancy knots! The pull on ones meant I just got up and grabbed the scarf and off I went! I see they also do PICC line covers too now! A5 the time I had the not so attractive cream tubigrip!!

Good Luck with finding what works for you. If you do have a Cancer centre near you, you may find they have scarves and hats for you to try on and someone there who can help show you how to tie them! Good Luck with it all and remember Chemo is going to be nowhere near as bad as you are imagining it’s going to be! Just remember to take it a day at a time and be honest with your team about any issues you have! You don’t get bonus points for being ‘brave’, if you don’t tell your team when you are struggling they can’t help you!

Keep putting one foot in front of the other and before you know it, you’ll be out the other side offering support and advise to other newbies! Wishing you all the best Hun. Sal xxx

  • Hiya ,

I have bought a fetching range of beanies from Amazon some plain and some quite snazzy. I've also got one with a scarf attached with instructions on how to tie it which is quite pretty and a more expensive turban style one for Sunday's.GrinGrin My hospital also has a wig bank so I have got a wig just in case. It looks good to my surprise so we shall see how often I wear it.

Good luck with it all. It's tough to lose your hair. I think it's one of the things that make us feel feminine but you can have lots of fun choosing headwear until your hair returns.

I bought my head wear from  ANNABANDA. Reasonably priced and soft materials. If you're going to wear a wig get some wig liners.
