Hi there
I have three small, slow growing tumours in my left breast. I was recommended a mastectomy and tummy diep by my first consultant; but a second opinion at the Marsden said a therapeutic mastectomy with 4 weeks radio after would give the same result oncologically, and far less invasive. It's a shorter op, shorter recovery, I'd keep my nipple and most of my breast.
Cancer websites seem to say it's personal choice, so thought I'd ask on here about experiences people have had with either approach.
If you had a tummy diep, are you pleased with the tummy result as well as the breast result (I really hate my tummy, but only because I now seem to have the option of losing it!)? Do the two breasts really match? Were you able to get to any radio or chemo you needed quickly, or do you feel you were delayed with problems healing.
If you had a therapeutic mammoplasty, did you feel confident about the cancer not coming back, even though you still had the breast? Did you have complications with the breast shape etc or was it all done and dusted in one go?
Thanks for all your thoughts - I know it's my decision in the end, but am so confused at this rate i might flip a coin!
Hi, there's so many decisions at the start isn't there!! I decided to have the mastectomy as I didn't trust that it wouldn't come back... I think I would have been worrying and checking constantly. I'm not having reconstruction either as I find I'm totally fine just as it is. Good luck deciding. I'm really happy with my decision but everyone is different!
Hi Flowerhappy
I'm sorry i didn't reply sooner - i did see your post and it was very helpful, i just caught up in the busy-ness of appointments. In the end I had the therapeutic mammoplasty - less because of the procedure more because the surgeon offering it me gave me more confidence about the long term treatment, so I felt better going with him.
Thanks again for sharing your experience
