Help?! I took out a well woman cancer insurance in 2002 and it was sold over the phone as covering all femail cancers. Jump forward to this year and I have been diagnosed with breast cancer dcis. Insurance company has now said that this isn't covered by my insurance even though it is not a peciific written exclusion. Has anyone any advice please. Thank you
Hi, I haven't had a well woman policy but had 2 others 1 general accident and 1 Avviva both with critical Illness cover. When I had melanoma in situ 6 yrs ago it wasn’t covered as it was in situ, even though it was a cancer.
However both paid out very quickly this time with a diagnosis of invasive breast cancer, apparently it’s the “ invasive” that made the difference. I have heard of others that don’t pay out till stage 4 is diagnosed, I didn’t read the small print when I took the policies out and to be honest I wouldn’t have understood them then either.
Dont know if that’s any help but hope you get sorted
I'm so glad you got payed out.
Its just not fair that we get sold these polices that cash in on our fear and then don't pay out. I have been over the fine print and there is no exclusion for dcis, when I took out the policy I don't think it was recognised.
The hospital recognises it as breast cancer, I had high grade dcis with micro invasions. Had to have a full mastectomy including lymph nodes. But the insurance company's say its a lesser cancer!!
Hi ya, that doesn’t seem right at all, I did a search for critical illness insurance in the general chat group on here and s thread popped up which you may find useful, don’t know how to do a link sorry, but the guy was successful in challenging his insurance company
good luck
Hi
I took out a well women plan originally with American Life, now Reassure.
Mine was for all female cancers as well. All you should need is a copy of your biopsy result if it says cancer it’s cancer whether it’s DCIS or not.
Mine wasn't DCIS so I know it’s different but Cancer is cancer, don’t give up.
Call the McMillan helpline they will be able to advise you.
Let us know how you get on x
Hi there,
i had critical illness cover on my mortgage which was taken out 18 years before my diagnosis so also a pretty old policy. Like Ruthie I had invasive ductal cancer and they paid out but I do remember reading in the small print on my policy when I was making the claim that some breast cancers were excluded. I’m sure I remember ‘in situ’ being mentioned. So maybe your company are trying it cos that’s the norm in the industry. I’d have thought they would have to have said so in the exclusions though. Worth challenging. And good luck.
Linda x
